A. Attach a horn to a horse's head and you get an insta-unicorn.
I screwed up with the ribcage among other things. As far as I know, a horse should have 15 ribs. Reference is often hard to find, especially since all the anatomy guides I had show the skeletal framework so that the animal is standing still. I wanted to draw some movement and a trickier position even with the expense of correct anatomy.
B. How about a deer-shaped unicorn? I tried to scetch the skeleton diagonally. A common European deer is small and stocky. It lacks the grace of a horse, but I find it cute. I added the tufts of fur, a mane and a curved horn to make it look more like a unicorn. Perhaps this type would be suited for moving in mountaineous terrain?

No problem dear! You need to be told when you've got a great idea!
And yep! I do love me some OotS. Elan is my baby! /giggle. And I got my favorite D&D character made into an avvie by one of the awesome people on the forum. Maybe they are still doing it. It would be worth checkin out. :) (Good eye... only 3 people on this enire site have figured it out. lol )

A moosicorn? Rofl! That'd be great. But yeah, I agree... I've never been a great fan of sugar-coated unicorns. I think they should be at least partially fierce and nasty. Preferably bad-smelling too.
Oh, and thanks for the fave, btw! I'm flattered to hear that these silly bones might actually be of some help. ^^

I definitely like the deer one better. Simply because it's closer to the original unicorn idea (the medieval kind, with the deer body, horse head, lion tail, etc). I think those are awesome, and a lot more interesting/creative than just plunking a horn on any ol' white horse.
Yeah, that's true! The western unicorn has a beautiful history in art ranging from medieval tapestries to those romantic and puffy 19th century paintings. The deer shape is closer to the original, but I also like the strong build of the horse... Though even then I often give the unicorn a chin beard, cloven hooves or a lion's tail for that medieval touch. ^^
I've always loved the more deer-style 'corns. :)
Thought you might be interested in this . . . not sure if they have Breyers in Finland but I was psyched when they came out with this model, I'm going to have to snag one.

The unicorns you see in some of those sugar-coated fairy poo posters are really awful!
To be honest, I'm guilty of drawing those myself - but never consciously! The kitch elements just sort of... creep in. You decide to add just one star and next thing you notice you've drawn a rainbow as well.

Nice technique on these. I couldn't draw something like this, but I do have some knowledge about veterinary anatomy, so here goes:
- Horses usually have 18 ribs
- There is something wrong with the shoulder blade of the one on the left. (looks like it was turned inside out)
- There should be 7 neck vertebrae
- The front part of the pelvis (the ischium) on the one on the left is strange (there shouldn't be a "hook" pointing down & backwards)
- The pelvis-spine-junction is off - the pelvis should be placed higher up and more to the front.
- The sacral bone is missing on the left one.
- The patella is missing on the left one and both patellae set too low on the right one.
- There should be only one metacarpal bone on the front right leg on the one on the left
- The costal processes of the lumbar vertebrae are missing
Don't take this the wrong way - I think this is great from a technical point of view, but since you asked about anatomy, I felt compelled to comment ;)

Many thanks for the information! It's indeed muchly appreciated, even though the names of the bones sound pretty alien to me... Especially since English is not my native language
When doodling this I used a pretty poor-quality ref that didn't show the horse in the position I was trying to draw. It was standing still and stiff and facing a crucially wrong direction. I'm fairly sure I counted 15 ribs, but it seems I indeed missed some.
Ah, excuses, excuses... You always gotta have excuses! ^^;;
Anyway, you sound like you really know horses. I had this friend who used to know everything there was to know about horses - and I mean everything! She moved to England later on, but every now and then she pays me a visit. Thanks to her advice my horses don't look like dogs anymore... But they're still far from being anatomically correct. =)

Sorry, I'll have to pass then - Finnish is a language that I'm completely unfamiliar with. You'll have to find the translations for yourself.
As for riding, it is a lovely pasttime if you are so inclined, and the only way to find that out is to try it. There are probably some "riding farms" or "riding schools" around where you live that rent out the equipment (boots, trousers, helmet etc.), where you could go and try to see whether you like it. Have them give you an older, calm horse for starters and see how you like it.

I will look for some better refs in the future. ^^
And I'll definitely gotta find out if there is a riding school somewhere nearby. I've heard that riding lessons can be very expensive, but for me it would be an interesting experience just to brush a real horse's mane.

You can find pretty good refs for horses with a google search. Here's a pretty good pic, I think. =)

As for the deer, I have this book about comparative anatomy. It mostly just contains very detailed studies about separate joints and knuckles... But there were a couple of good pictures too that showed the full skeleton of the animal in question.

Well, your attempts at skeletons are much better than mine! Though mine I only use for concept and would never, ever show anyone :D. The only off-the-bat anatomy relating to skeletons that I can remember is that the necks of all mammals have exactly 7 bones.
I quite like the deer one, though mainly for idea as I like both sketchs alot.

I was always pretty bad in biology. I recall some studybook saying that your average human has about 300 bones, but I have no idea how animals are constructed. I just make wild guesses and hope that most people are as clueless about this stuff as I am. =D
Seven neck bones... I gotta keep that in mind.

I've never really dug on A style unicorns. I've always preferred them to look more like the really old medieval ones, what with the cloven hooves and lions tails. Basically exactly how they're described in The Last Unicorn. :P Like a horse, but more delicate and slender. Longer neck, smaller head, etc.
I LOVE the idea of a unicorn deer, though. Have you ever seen white deer? They're amaaazzing.
Beautifully rendered skeletons btw @_@

I think I like the horse type more because even though it's not "historically accurate", I like fierce and aggressive unicorns and it's easier for me to picture a fierce horselike unicorn than a fierce deerlike unicorn. Hmm... but how about unicorns with the build of a mountain goat? They could have a long beard, very curvy horn and hairy cloven feet. =)
Oh, and thanks for the compliment! The skeletons itself are a bit wonky, there are bones that shouldn't be there and the ribcages were a pain... But at least I tried. =P
