For a second I thought that was the laughing cow.

The character on the right is actually an attempt to draw this famous mascot (cf. the credits in the description below the picture mentioning Benjamin Rabier who designed the Laughing Cow for Léon Bel, the son Jules Bel, founder of the cheese company Bel Group).

Ah. I figured that couldn't be it, because this post was about the year of the ox, and I'm not entirely sure, but I think oxen, and cows are different species.

Well, it depends of the definition: in English Wikipedia, it is defined as “a bovine trained as a draft animal. Oxen are commonly castrated adult male cattle; castration makes the animals easier to control. Cows (adult females) or bulls (intact males) may also be used in some areas.” - whereas the French definition for «bœuf» is "castrated bull" (with no mention as a draft animal).

The Chinese sign is more "generic" than the Vietnamese one which is specifically described as a water buffalo. And you may be right on the fact that the hybridization between Bos bubalis and Bos taurus (European cow) is probably not possible (I don't have any example in mind).
