How long to work on an art
Probably not going to do this for all of these paintings but it is fun to see the progression and it does teach a lesson that the previous one didn't quite do as well.
Like the previous lesson, I wanted to see how well the piece does every 30m of work. Your time as an artist is valuable. Literally, the more time you spend on an art piece that's already paid for the less you can work on other things meaning you're lowering your $/hr. Speed isn't everything however as people would be upset if I showed the 2hr long piece as the commission example and only gave them the 30m long one. So what's the balance?
The key thing is realizing that often people don't notice the extra bit at the end. That time when you scour the whole piece and find all those little mistakes and pop some highlights or darken darks. I think almost everyone would have been fine with the 1.5hr piece. So was my extra 33% time worthwhile? To me, yes. I think it adds a lot to it and makes me much happier. Could I go longer on it? Absolutely yes. But in doing so I only lose time and gain very little in terms of quality.
Like I said before, no one really notices the 33% extra time to increase the quality by 10%. Do so on your own pieces or if you really want the practice. But it's not sustainable for every piece you do. If I didn't have these next to each other would you have really noticed the differences?

Having them next to each other makes it more noticeable. A slider can't do the effect in the last image, as I actually went and changed the values of those areas. So a slider would just make the entire background darker, not give the directional lighting like I have there.
