Hmm let me guess, this is a little reference to the failure of the $1 billion Mars Observer mission of 1993, which managed a couple of test images of the Red Planet before the orbiter mysteriously lost orientation with Earth and tumbled out of control, therefore missing it's target. (Yeah, I'm a bit of an astronomy nerd.) ^__^

Yes. This image was drawn after the disappoinment from the failed Mars probe that stopped sending signals after it was instructed to fire it's motor for a burn into orbit around the planet. I also went to a JPL/NASA hosted party some time later in Pasadena for the Mars Lander, but much to everyone's dismay, the lander stopped signaling shortly after deployment. That was a real shame because that probe had a microphone on it, and for the first time it could have been able to record the sounds from Mars.

They helped with the Hubble as well, didn't they? > : )
