The author was an ex-Hunter (as in they'd messed up enough to be thrown out; imagine what it takes to achieve that in a volunteer group) who knew how far he could slant things before actually lying. Besides, it only alludes to real events, not depicts them. And the Star Hunters got some mileage out of the depiction.
