Hilarious story!
Riverbanks just recently planted a new tree in the lion exhibit. To prevent the lions from knocking over and destroying it, the zoo installed these metal "plant-like" prongs in the ground. Through them, is running 2,000 volts worth of electricity.
Chuma decided to check them out, and got too close. There was a loud pop, like a fire cracker, and this lion hopped at least two feet in the air and beat a hasty retreat!
While I did not capture this hysterical event, I did photograph the aftermath. This is Chuma hiding behind his brother on the other end of their exhibit... glaring at the prongs... XD

What? No... Riverbanks is top notch in animal treatment. And don't get me started about what's ethical and what's not.
And, yeah. 2,000 volts is harmless. It fells like getting hit with a ball-peen hammer for a fraction of a second, nothing long term or sinister. When the tree roots itself to the ground, they take the prongs out.
Just enjoy the photography.
