One of my more involved projects, the Red Fox was built from a Playmobil tall ship that I found at a Goodwill for $4.00, and was missing quite a few components, but I could tell that with a bit of work it could become a fantastic model. Some of what I did was replace the missing jib and toy like plastic flags with fabric salvaged from kites I have pulled out of trees. I added the rigging and bell, along with an anchor chain instead of the silver string that the anchor had been attached to. A ballast attachment was needed, and was a part produced by Playmobil for their ships, but was very expensive. I 3d printed one instead. I also painted some of the scrollwork around the windows on the stern gold, and applied weathering with an airbrush.
The tall ship Red Fox is a museum ship replicated after the original Red Fox, which disappeared in 1762 off the coast of Casino Island while transporting over five tons of gold bullion, along with artifacts that had been Illegaly plundered from Greece, including statutes and what is believed to have been the remains of a bronze model steam ship, powered by an aeolipile similar to that created by Heron of Alexandria, thought to be one of his lost works.
The Red Fox is owned by the North Bay Historic Seaport, a maritime and railway museum located on Casino Island of the Spontoon Island archipelago. Built in 1962 for the tricentenial of the sinking of the original Red Fox, she offers sight seeing cruises on weekends, and a month long sail training voyage, which culminates in a mock battle with other replica tall ships during the annual Speed Week festivities.
On October 22, 1986, the crew of the research vessel Talamego sighted a wreck beleived to be the original Red Fox on sonar, but a mysterious fire destroyed the Talamego's equipment and records the following day. Pacific Dewolfe, captain of the Talamego and owner of the North Bay Historic Seaport complex, has been searching for her ever since.
On a side note, a Playmobil ship of the same model has actually crossed the Atlantic!
