After a hearty day of hunting, Drake decides to practice some magic.
Ethereal Hands is a perfect beginner's sigil, it has a lower bar for entry due to its lack of an element, low chance of breaking focus- it's an extension of your hand, after all- and a high skill ceiling with its many potential uses in hard labor, fine manipulation, and handling harmful materials. It hasn't been widely adopted yet, as magic is still somewhat taboo and young, but the benefits have been acknowledged worldwide.
Chalk paste is Varik's preferred scripting method, passed on from Jakob. It's easy to wash off, and maintains a form well enough for the inscription to pull power even as it wears away. The downside is the constant upkeep if you want the script to continue long-term, but with how cheap the material is, there's no worries even if you're a hunter on a tight budget.
Of course, Drake has now inherited the habit of using chalk paste. This has a rather amusing side effect of giving Ethereal Hands a chalky, dripping outline.
As for the choice of setting... Well, Varik kind of lives out of his truck. So a dark alley with some space was necessary.
