Please imagine with me the potential for The Contessa to make a comeback. Imagine her forcing Penelope into a hypnotic, spice induced state where both her and Bentley’s intelligence and knowledge was stolen/abused for Cyrille Le Paradox’s scheme for time travel. But the only reason The Contessa was on board to work for Cyrille was because she wanted to get back at Bentley. He was the one responsible for ripping Sly, Murray, and Carmelita out of her control. She had some interest in getting back at Sly too, but Bentley was her main target.
If only Thieves in Time was written better. :’( Penelope and Bentley did not deserve what happened... And there was so many cool opportunities WASTED.

Sly 4 was such a mixed bag. There were some things I really liked and things I really didn't. I agree that there was a lot of wasted opportunity there. I also didn't like how short it was. Sly 2 and 3 had about 7-8 chapters while this one only had 4 though I assume that's because that's all Sanzura could afford to do. It would have been amazing to see what Sucker Punch could have done with it.
If they hadn't wasted their money on fully animated cutscenes (of which there were MANY) and went for the comic-y animatic style the previous games had done I'm SURE they could have made a longer game. They also could have given less dialogue to every character because everyone talks WAY too much for no reason, thus saving even more money. They easily could have dumped more into the writing development too.
But nah let's just place our funds in all the wrong places. That's fine.
Personally, I can't really think of anything that impressed me about Sly 4. Sure the animated cutscenes were fluid enough or whatever but it wasn't a style that was nearly as iconic or visually appealing like the originals. And that's not nostalgia talking either. The designs and styles were very... Ugly. Outside and inside the game. And every female character was done especially dirty by making them super thin, badly designed, and shallow. No female Cooper clanmates either, but in a way I guess its a blessing because they couldn't ruin them... I still can't help but be somewhat sore though because we all know exactly why they didn't do it. The story wasn't even interesting nor did I care the least bit about the villain group. Some of them were even cloned characters. The second game already had a tiger and misunderstood artist.
All in all, they had a really cool concept but dropped the ball completely.
... Sorry for the rant. I have a lot of strong feelings on the matter. ;__;

I've rarely been so conflicted about a game. In terms of gameplay it was mostly great - prehistoric area aside - but in terms of story and character... *shudder*
What they did to Penelope was the worst aspect, for me. This approach would have been a vast improvement. Worth noting, though, there was clearly another game intended, given the cliffhanger, and you never know what reveals it might have included.

I never played the game myself (when it first came out I avoided it completely because I hated the style and thus didn't even want to know what the rest of it was like), but I can believe that it was the same or slightly more polished than the originals. However, yes, everything else was done very poorly.
Agreed about Penelope. They threw her under the bus for a super cheap "twist". Nothing more.
Man, at this point, I don't even know if I want another Sly game. If they did decide to continue from where Thieves in Time stopped, there's already so much damage done that I'm not sure I'd wanna keep going down that rabbit hole. There would have to be some serious rehauling by competent writers or written out of canon completely (in my opinion). It's also already been eight years since Sly 4 released. That's a long time for something to be revived from the dead.
Like you I'm very torn on the matter. It could either continue and go very well, or end very poorly. And if, by fate, its going to end badly I would rather have it die here than continue on. Being a Silent Hill fan has taught me that much.

Another Sly game would be a serious challenge for whoever makes it, agreed. I can't dismiss the possibility, given the franchise as a whole is still somewhat alive - yes, the movie's almost certainly not gonna happen, but last I heard the animated series was still an active project - of one appearing, but I would approach it with serious caution, regardless of whether it's a continuation or a reboot.
Honestly, the reboot possibility might scare me more. I won't touch a Silent Hill game past No4, and I have bad memories of the third Prince of Persia incarnation. Reboots rarely seem to work.

I don't know. Sony themselves is SUPER sketchy. Not that any of the other game companies aren't either but I trust them less than some others. I highly doubt they would listen to fans of anything that isn't insanely popular at this exact moment in time. Sly is indeed a generally highly praised series, but its also been dead for 8 years. It becoming a priority no matter how loud we scream is, well, not looking good right now. I also don't want to buy a PS5, but I digress.
That said, there are chances for it to be redeemed. But we'd be taking a big risk because who knows whose hands it would land into and what their writing and design teams are like. It's scary. :(
Its hard for me to feel confident on where the series could go from here. So much has already been ruined. I don't want to see if fall further from grace than it already has...

Why didn't I think of that?! Really good idea there!
I have to admit that I did enjoy (some of) the gameplay to Sly 4 but it was the actual plot that really got on the iffy side. The time travelling aspect I didn't mind but it was how they did Penelope dirty as well as how Sly's and Carmelita's relationship went through that really rubbed me the wrong way, as well as the cliffhanger ending.
I actually did an entire semi plot retread regarding the plot. Mainly tackling the relationship between the thief and the cop as well as a big change to Penelope's betrayal and definitely the final level and the ending. Link's down here but it's a docs file that's quite a bit of a read.
