Oh, surely someone in a civilization that has technology and ornamentation has some sense of self. And if they do, they have some sort of identifier. If he is an eel, maybe an electric eel, it might be radio. Or sonic. Or a color pattern. But there would be some self-identifier. But in any case, if he/she/they are able to engage in trade with an alien species, that implies a certain.. flexibility. I have hopes for these guys. (Where I live Youze Guyze is a gender neutral term. :D )
