Final movement - "Finale." The opening has been called a "palate cleanser." The audience certainly needs something after the furious Scherzo before diving right in to the last movement, so that makes sense. What follows is a maniacal circus-march, with elements of jazz thrown in. Some of the hardest flute and horn solos ever written can be found in this last movement, and the ending is one of the most intense, exciting moments I've ever experienced in music. Hope you enjoyed Harbison's "Quintet for Winds."

Hehe, I can tell! :3
I did a lot of big horn stuff in my performances last week. The Italian Symphony had a really fun part for me, and BWV 79 had a movement that it was just all me all the time (I had all of three quarter rests and a TON of 8th notes in 2/2), and I even had a solo in the first piece we did in Symphonic Band.
And hopefully you can hear all of that this coming week! :3

I've been reading your updates- I'm looking forward to hearing these performances! The Italian Symphony is pretty tricky for clarinets, too. The only time I've performed it, it was too hard for me to articulate it all. Since then, however, I've learned a new technique that has solved the articulation problem for me. So I would love to do Mendelssohn 4 again.
Sounds like you've been really busy with these multiple performances in such a short time. I love and hate times like that- mostly love though. ^o^

I was on the edge of my seat for almost throughout, especially in this last movement, and your ensemble and you have managed to get quite a few of these mad motifs stuck in my head! Oh, how I wish I could be there applauding :D
It was a thrilling experience listening to this! Kudos to flippantmoniker for the recording too! T'was quite intimate, in that I felt almost like I was there, much nicer than the latest batch of CDs I bought, they were so "clean" that they almost sounded like sampler-generated things with a lot of emotion. Hurrah for intimacy in recordings, this was just like listening to my older and favourite records (well, they're still CDs, but for the sake of non repetition...)

Isn't it an exciting piece of music? It's so much fun to play, and just get carried away by the intensity. Our audience usually craves only the classics, but even the older, more conservative members of the audience were really raving at the end. We heard gasps and exclamations (always very gratifying) and we were swarmed by people at the reception afterwards. I really think the piece is something special- it does a very modern dance while remaining accessible to just about anyone.
The intimacy of the recording is nice- I was happy Flippant was able to get everything without it overloading the mic (as it gets very soft and quite loud). The room was much smaller than an orchestral concert hall, too, which adds to the clarity and intimacy of the recording. No hidden mistakes in that room! >o< Hehehe
