Unemployed Guardian (Mulan 2020 Live Action)
Honestly, while I haven't seen it in a long while, but we had a slot to fill so here it is.
I still remember enough bits of Mulan that make me feel something. Hearing the songwork of Mulan is moving, Mushu is hilarious, and the simplified story of a woman taking her father's place in war time is such an endearing start to the story, you want to cheer for the protagonist. Mulan is a great film, great music, classic animation, decent characters, and a good story. A film during Disney's golden animation decade that was great enough to be including in the best Kingdom Hearts game.....
....so it's a no wonder they're deciding to cash in on a live-action remake. And, of course, they want to change some things, which is ok....but some of it for redundant reasons....like making things 'more realistic', which seems to be "this age" of Disney for some apparent reason...
It just kind of seems like they're making Mulan far more warrior-esque in this version than in the animated version. Remembering how it went along, Mulan was more like the beginning of Tomb Raider's Lara Croft, a capable, strong woman, but not exactly a masterful warrior with a hardened will. Sure, Mulan gets some training to fight the Hun, but she doesn't go cutting down hordes of enemies with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon vibes...no, she does it smart, and with a little help. I mean, I think they're making Mulan seem a bit TOO strong, too capable. There is such a thing as being strong, whereas vulnerabilities can make you appreciate a character's win more when they overcome them or succeed despite them.
Of course, only going by the trailers, can't be a proper judge. I mean they're both based off the "Ballad of Mulan", so they're not original by any means so they can't exactly eclipse one another, being both interpretations of that media.
But, they got rid of the dragon. WHAT?!
Honestly, if you take a moment to think in the original Mulan, you realize the stakes. If Mulan is found out, by her OWN people, that she was disguised as a man, she would be KILLED. Everyday she had to hide that fact during training. Not to mention the Hun ravaging villages, the rush to get an army going to taken them down, and things are actually quite dark. We NEEDED some comedy relief, and that was Mushu's job, the dragon in question. So instead we get a Phoenix...which I guess is going to be more symbolic....
And yeah, I get their so-called "reasons"...but still doesn't quite cut it for me. I mean, for instance, one is to make things more "real" ? REALLY?
I mean...they have a witch. A witch that, as we see, can TRANSFORM into a bird. Ok...yeah...sure...that's...realistic Disney, sure....more realistic than the cherished ancestors of the culture looking to aid their families toward honor, sure....
So yeah, I can't be a judge on Mulan as a whole without seeing it, but being a dragon myself, I'm a bit insulted to see one out of the job...

Did they? When? *chuckles* But yeah, I heard about that...briefly.
Wasn't that a series??
No, but get why that's confusing. It never came out on theaters. It's an exclusive on their own little network....like the KH series and MI series is going to be.
Wow...that sucks...
Tell me about it...

Iago got screwed over on that one!
Though, to be fair, haven't seen that one just yet...and despite Genie controversy, hope Smith makes it somewhat enjoyable.
Was it because he was human or because he was blue?
I understand the first *snickers* but kind of insult on the second heh.
