Lank and Gargantua (Alternate Universe)—by jacfox
Oh, the green kobold with the huge dragon mech? Yeah, I know him.
His name's Lank. He was the weird one as a kid. He was always teased, even bullied, for being small and nerdy, and I think that made him a bit out there. I think he saw tech as a way out of the ridicule, because he was always studying it really hard. He always latched onto stories with monsters, aliens, transformations, that sort of thing. Playing pretend back in elementary school always saw him acting like he was some other species or some other size. That kid always wanted to be something different, something more.
He built a little robot back in sixth grade and showed it off to everyone he could with the goofiest smile on his face. He didn't shut up about it until the class bully broke it. He cried for days.
In high school he made this mechanical arm that had all sorts of gadgets in it. Made him stronger, too. He was always showing it off and never wanted to take it off. Pissed off the sports teams by barging into the gym and bench pressing a few hundred pounds with just that arm. Rumor is his parents forced it off of him after a while because he couldn't shower while it was on.
That giant mech of his, Gargantua, was his big project throughout university. To hear him talk about it, it's like he's one with it while he's piloting it. Everybody seems to think he's just being as passionate as ever. But if you ask me, he's not kidding about that. That thing moves so smoothly for its size that it's like it's his actual body. And if he really is wiring his brain to that thing, if he really is turning himself into a 30' robot… well, good for him. He's found his way to be something more.
