Summer was starting its transition to autumn as Fashi and Nini took a seat upon a park bench.
“What do you say, Ling-Ling?” her mother, Nini, suggested while gently lowering her daughter down upon the soft dirt.
Ling-Ling, who was a two year old, going on three, red panda, was clad in a unisex-colored diaper and nothing else. Her mom and Aunt may have liked wearing dresses and chattering like a lake full of Liancheng white ducks, but that wasn’t for her. She was headstrong, proud. and fought against anything that didn’t agree with her interests.
“Otter!” she proclaimed upon looking towards the ornate fountain to see that she was not the only kid at the park. “Otter!”
Ling-Ling’s mother and Aunt Fashi looked where the young panda was pointing to see not just a otter, but a very familiar one that was nearly the same age as Ling-Ling.
“Ever feel a sense of déjà vu?” Fashi asked her sister.
Nini smiled.
“I wonder if they remember each other?” she asked curiously.
Ling-Ling eagerly toddled off towards the fountain while crying out, “Otter!” as she got ever closer with every wobbly step she made at top speed without tripping over her own feet.
Fashi whispered a few words to herself before putting a hand to her forehead.
“I believe Ling-Ling may just be recalling now,” she stated as her telepathy spell gave her a brief peek inside the young panda’s mind. “The setting seems to be bringing back memories with each passing moment.”
Nini nudged her sister.
“How is it that you get the gift of sorcery from mom and I didn’t?” she asked.
The sorceress panda allowed a smirk to form across her face.
“Magic is more of a burden than you may believe, Nini,” she stated.
“Maybe,” the mother replied. “Though it would be nice to know what’s rolling inside my little Ling-Ling’s head. Especially when it comes to her potty training.”
“If it means anything,” teased Fashi. “You were a late taker to the toilet, too.”
Nini blushed.
“Mom told you?” she asked bashfully.
“No,” grinned Fashi. “You did when you just thought about it and you then thought on how you asked mom about how things worked with you and-”
BONF!
“Hey!” cried Fashi while tending to her sore upper-arm. “What was that for?”
“For, as per usual, using your magic to get into my business,” winked Nini. “You may have the ‘magic’, but I’ve got the brains and brawn.”
The siblings glared at each other for a moment before letting out a shared laugh and returning their focus to Ling-Ling.

“Otter!” the red panda cried while bracing herself upon the rim of the fountain that the dress-wearing, diaper-clad otter was hunched over on its rim while merrily playing with a rubber duck toy within the fountain’s pool.
SKISH
The young otter was startled by Ling-Ling’s announcement and tumbled into the shallow pool within the fountain.
Ling-Ling laughed as she watched the otter’s dress drip with water as her diaper quickly drank up all the fountain water that it could.
“You scare me!” the otter shouted with a smile. As an otter, she could not help liking being in the water. Her family didn’t like her going into the water when she was wearing her clothes, but this panda gave her the best excuse for having gotten herself wet when she wasn’t supposed to. “Bad panda!”
“No bad panda!” Ling-Ling retorted while pulling herself up and plopping her padded bottom on the rim of the fountain’s pool and allowing her bare feet to settle in the pool. “You silly otter!”
The two froze as something ‘clicked’. For the otter, it was seeing her rubber duck trying to swim away. However, for Ling-Ling, she found her mind filling with pictures. This was a familiar otter.
“You Elise?” she asked while splashing about in the water with her feet. “Your name, Elise?”
The otter found comfort sitting in her waterlogged diaper within the shallow pool as she looked towards the panda with curiosity.
“I, elise,” she replied while fidgeting with her rubber ducky. “Elise live near park and know how to get home but need leave before sun go night-night.”
The otter returned to her play. However she was far more active while racing her ducky around the circumference of the fountain now that she was wet and knew she had the perfect excuse for strolling home all wet.

Ling-Ling felt herself drift into a daydream. Though this one was different as she could here herself talking just like a grown-up in it.
“It was a year ago at this very time of day,” the voice in her head said. “I finally figured out how to run when I saw Elise having a race with her little ducky in this very fountain against another boy and girl.”
FWOOF
The daydream became reality as she saw the yellow duck boy and tigress toddler use their toys to send Elise’s toy duck out of the water.
“Elise was so sad,” her inner-voice continued to narrate. “So you grabbed Elise’s duck, gave it back to her, and splashed up a storm that made the duck boy and toddler tigress run away.”
Ling-Ling saw her younger, and more clumsy, self offer back the rubber duck to Elise.
“That is when she told you her name,” the narration stated. “She said she was an otter and that she was happy you helped her save her favorite toy from being hurt by those bullies.”
The young panda watched as her younger self leapt into the fountain’s pool with Elise and started to playfully splash about. Her shortalls were soaked and her diaper weighed a ton as it tried to escape from the confines of her clothing. However her mother and Elise’s mother quickly came by and removed the flailing tots from the water.
“That was a lot of fun,” the adult-sounding Ling-Ling voice seemed to giggle. “You wished you could have played longer, but your mom said you needed to get home and get cleaned up and Elise had to do the same.”
FWOOF
The view now was of her one year old self being carried away while waving towards Elise who was also being carried away.
“You wanted to see her again,” the older her said. “Your parents bought you a book about otters that night as you wanted to know more about the special friend you made in the water after making those bullies go away.”

Ling-Ling found herself back in the real world as if only a second had passed. Unfortunately her lack of movement, not to mention startling Elise, caught the attention of her aunt and mother.
“Are you okay?” Nini asked the young otter who looked more confused over being asked such a question when she was having the time of her life.
“She’s clean,” Fashi stated after performing a very quick diaper check on Ling-Ling.
“Elise!” announced the young panda while pointing towards the otter. “Elise friend!”
Nini looked confused as Fashi smiled.
“I think someone else in the family is going to be a magical princess!” she boasted while looking towards her sister.
PUMPF
Ling-Ling pushed herself away from her aunt and stood herself up proudly.
“No princess!” she proclaimed. “I save myself and no need boy to rescue!”
Nini smiled at her sister who got a big snub by her daughter.
“She may have magical powers,” she stated. “However she’s going to be nobody’s pushover.”
Fashi laughed.
“So it appears she takes after both of us,” she added. “So what does that leave of her father?”
Nini took notice of a male and female otter approaching.
“His adoration for ‘action figures’ and sports,” she replied while waving towards the pair who, as expected, were Elise’s parents.
“Well, little miss magic pants,” said Fashi while picking up Ling-Ling and moving to greet the elder otters. “Looks like we should get more properly introduced.”
***
Elise and Ling-Ling found themselves spending more time with each other after their caretakers exchanged words and phone numbers. Their friendship would only further blossom with time as Ling-Ling found herself gradually improving upon her magical abilities.

;) As you noticed, I did borrow from inspiration you gave in that picture. Lanny was so cute in knowing what he was looking at and, given the context for this story, I thought it would be a fun way to get Ling-Ling interested in seeing Elise. :)
Your 'Otter' post is one of those few I can look at and say how I can reimagine it over-and-over while even other things remind me of it.
I hope you enjoyed the story. This one was a bit of a challenge due to how these characters were new to me. Though it was definitely a welcome challenge as, truly, I like getting to know other characters that people I interact with have. :)
