Fanart of Tails-KO. Character designed by
ChaosCroc (inspired by Tails from Sonic series by SEGA)
I've followed Croc's stuff from way back, and was familiar with his wide range of Sonic themed robotic characters. Last year I got my hands on a Tails-KO reference (front, back and side) in Croc's Discord server and decided to model the whole thing in 3D. Robots are a little easier in 3D due to their solid shape.
So I opened up Blender, started trying to model it, got the feet and kinda up to the hips... and then utterly collapsed due to lack of skill. Pushing it aside I focused on other things for a few months.
Then in a stream I saw
Banderi doing sculpting in Blender. From him I learned that modern Blender Sculpting doesn't require you to subdivide the mesh in advance, but has dynamic topography that will add vertices depending on how you sculpt. Encouraged by this I went back to my Tails-KO model (references already set up) and started sculpting the general shape, and then narrowing it down.
After a while, the shape had taken form... I got a good recognisable likeness. However, it just looked a bit too rough. The sculpting left lots of little pieces that just could be better. Smoothing large areas tended to remove detail, and meanwhile little artifacts were here and there. After deliberation, I decided to just create a new mesh with subdivision modifier for smoothness, using the sculpted figure as a base to help me past the hard parts. When I mentioned this plan on Banderi's Discord server,
ikani said this was called retopology and part of a normal workflow!
So I started again, posting WIPs on ChaosCroc's Discord server and getting a lot of encouragement from a lot of cool people.
Mesh, subdivision, texturing, texture painting, basic materials work, rigging and posing. Not to mention a smidgen of scene setting (Background uses art also by ChaosCroc: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/33149046/). Worked a lot on it for over a week. I regularly had to look up how to do things in Blender, so thanks to all the people who made short Blender tutorial videos, which I would dutifully play at double speed.
And ultimately, here she is! Enjoy!
