Here is the front and back view of what I hope to be the final design of the 3D printed follow me eyes that I am eyeing for the head of my dragon fursuit that I am making improvements.
This time I spaced out the enlarged holes just a bit more. I also increased the pupil diameter to 45mm from 41mm I used previously. Got a much smoother result. Still a little flashing in the holes but I can poke them out with a needle. I am not getting that weird horizontal line like the last set too.
The vision out of these seems to be pretty good when I did a quick test. Of course I won't be able to tell conclusively until I Finnish and mount them in the suit. But as far as I can tell, the vision is just as good as the buckram ones I already have in the head.
I am hoping the recess area of the iris along with the circular hole pattern would not only made painting easier, but also gives it a nice, crisp look. I figure the hole pattern would blend in better with the radial striations than the usual regular grid layout of the usual buckram that most fursuit makers use.
So what you guys think? Is this a good substitute of the cut foam strip method of making follow me eyes? Is anyone out there doing something like these?
P.S. I forgot to mention that I modeled the holes with a slight "cone" shape with a 30° chamfer on the backside, giving as much vision as possible at the fairly extreme mounting angle in the head. Along with making the iris area as thin as I dared, I envision that will give me the best field of vision. That is my mission anyway.
