Seriously sensational snickerdoodles from the kitchens of goldhart
******************************
Nothing very fancy about these, but the recipe is delicious oAo if you don't like cinnamon you can roll them in just sugar and make tasty sugar cookies instead!
Snickerdoodles
1/2 cup butter - softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
~3 tablespoons cinnamon sugar OR
~3 tablespoons sugar + 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
Cream together butter, shortening, 1 1/2 cups sugar, the eggs and the vanilla. Blend in the flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt.
Shape dough by rounded spoonfuls into balls, and roll the balls in the cinnamon sugar (or mixed ground cinnamon and sugar - which, mind you, is not the same as proper cinnamon sugar; I prefer cinnamon sugar, myself, but didn't have any on hand for this batch). If you don't like cinnamon, you can roll them in plain sugar instead (or vanilla sugar if you have it, or any flavored sugar you like!). I usually do some of each.
Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until set but not too hard. They should be puffy as they come out - they'll flatten down a bit while cooling. Remove immediately from baking sheets to cool on cooling rack.
