In the Afterworld, there exists a very warped range of intelligence: those at the lowest are merely shambling rotten ghouls who retain only the base instincts, mannerisms, and stupidity akin to that of human beings. These are easily 98% of the individuals in the solitary town of Vivus Falter. On the higher range of the intellect scale, 1% of all citizens are of above-average or otherwise impressive intellect. The other 1% is Lukale and his mentor, possessing average human level intellect with the potential to improve even further.

Because 98% of the population are without the intellect to realize things beyond their own existence and basic needs, this means only 2% of the populace are aware that they are, in fact, capable of feats that are superhuman in nature - at least, to our nature. One of the basic abilities is to "shatter" one's self.

Shattering is the act of short-range teleportation by simply desiring a location visible to the naked eye. With barely even a thought, their physical forms are stripped away like a broken window before disappearing entirely, then reforming as if in reverse at said desired location. All of this happens just beyond an instant.

Lukale here is demonstrating this ability. With a step and a thought (and slow-motion technology harnessed by necromantic music... or panda bears), he begins to break apart into fragments, smirking devilishly all the while. Will he reappear behind you? Is he going to step onto that curiously-shaped fragment of stone off in the distance? Probably not, but it happens too fast for you to realize. Perhaps he's feeling generous enough to save you from the bone elf crawling into your sternum, too.
