I actually debated myself quite a bit over how to handle this particular moment, and how much "Science" to use vs how much "Fiction". There were earlier drafts of this entire chapter that used nothing but "real" physics. In the end though, I decided that the story didn't need bulletproof theoretical physics to be fun.
