TwitterWhen animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

oh that's easy, give me a moment... *clears throat*
*speaks in fake Hemlock voice* "Hi! my name is Hemlock. after seeing all my friends die by a couple lions, i decided to kill my own kid to spare him from the lion's cruelty, even though an escape tunnel was nearly finished so I could have just easily sacrificed myself in his stead so that he could have a shot at escaping. i justified myself by saying I would join him soon but I never followed through on that and kept on living. so now, because of what the lions did and what the lions made me do, I'm super super angry. rather than to take my anger out on any lions though, I decide to take out my anger on any random pred I come across. especially on Rask and Egg who are neither lions let alone cats and who have also never once done me any wrong ever... but I don't care about that. guilty, innocent... kill 'em all, I say and let the gods sort them out. or at the very least I would say that if that pesky Oren wasn't in charge who wouldn't allow me to just murder these two who never once harmed either me or any of the others... but its okay 'cause I got spears which means that Rask and Egg are even more at my mercy and I also seem to have the support of several of the other animals so all I gotta do is wait for stupid Oren to kick the bucket in one way or another and then I'm free to murder Rask and Egg as well as any other hapless predator who stumbles across our hideout as much as I please. boy, I can't wait for that day to happen"
how's that?
on a more serious note though: If you've ever been into video games, comics, animes, etc. you should have noticed by now that a lot of the greatest villains in fiction (in real life history too for that matter) tend to have very tragic and traumatic backstories and pasts which could easily fool a person into actually sympathizing with them... Darth Vader comes to mind, I mean he's got a pretty tragic backstory and its easy to feel sorry for him... but he also had kind of a hand in blowing up a whole planet, murdering billions... just saying...

honestly: I could forgive that if Hemlock didn't take her anger out on Rask and Egg. these two have done nothing to her, they never wronged her... they aren't even lions or cats which would make it a bit understandable... but Hemlock doesn't care. she doesn't care that Rask and Egg never hurt her or anyone else from this warren or whatever they call their hideout.
I disagree. I think she does care. A lot.
Because she doesn't know that they would never hurt her or anyone else in the warren. She can't be certain they won't hurt them or that they won't go back to others of their kind and sneak them into the warren.
She has experienced intense trauma after once living somewhere they thought they were safe. She doesn't want that to be repeated here. Not to her or anyone else in the warren.
We saw in Rask's dream/nightmare that he went towards the cubs like a predator, thus hinting that pinemarten's do prey on rabbits. So it isnt unreasonable to fear letting one in.

The phrase "protagonist centered morality" applies here.
Rask really isn't anything special, in universe. He's as much a serial killer as any other predator, and he's not known to the prey in the area. While he appears to be peaceful enough, they ultimately can't know--he could be there to spy on them, and if he is, they're doomed. Even if he's not, if he doesn't have the self-control--and even he doesn't know that he has--Oren's society falls apart. As they acknowledge.
How much would you risk to help your enemy?

The problem is that while the preds are by and large presented as unapologetic murderous monsters, what choice do they have? It's not their fault all the animals evolved to sapience at exactly the same instant. They have to have meat. At least, the weasels and cats do. They are obligate carnivores.
The second problem is that given how they ARE presented as unapologetic monsters for the most part, it's hard to see how this comic can end without 99%+ of the preds getting killed. Given the numbers, they are all going to either starve to death in short order or kill each other/get killed by the prey. There just isn't time to engineer a solution before nearly all the preds are dead.

"Close" might not have been enough. Close could mean another 30 minutes, another hour, another 2. They had been working on it for a couple days by the sound of things, so any of these would be "close" by those standards.
But they would only have seconds if the lions decided to come done there to get them. Plus, if the lions figured that they could only have dug so far, then they could just form a ring around the area and ambush them when they burst out.
Escape tunnels only really work if the captors don't know they exist until you have already escaped.
Also, Hemlock could be speaking with hindsight, like they weren't sure exactly how close they were at that moment. But afterwords, they realized they were literally just about to break through. Ie: the tragic case of acting on what limited information they had at that time.

If you're talking about the particularly angry comment I made and immediately regretted and deleted, I realized it was a particularly angry comment, immediately regretted it, and deleted it.
The comment I responded to was nonetheless in bad faith and unnecessarily hostile. In fact, you could say, it was quite rude. And about a fictional character.

It's...honestly funny to me how many people cannot sympathize with characters. Like, this is a world where sentient, sapient creatures are killed by other sapient creatures. It'd be like if we were hunted by all the predators and wildlife in the world that were as smart as us AND were bigger and stronger. Like... sensible(ish) people still attack and doxx each other online because their political affiliation or unpopular opinions, and they act like they'd be totally cool with an entire group of animals that would eat us? It's laughable, truly.
The inability for people to empathize with Hemlock just because we've seen Rask's side is honestly comical. You don't have to think Hemlock is right in her decisions and she still made mistakes and bad choices and is being intolerant... but like, it makes sense. They are literally prey animals being hunted to death and tortured by predators who don't care about their lives. Ofc they understand predators need to eat to live and they're not evil. But it doesn't change the fact they're predators that need to eat. People here are being ridiculous and stupid with how much they deny Hemlock has a point, or that it's not understandable to prey animals to be afraid. Everyone I see hating Hemlock can't even acknowledge she 100% has a point (which she does, whether or not you agree with it is definitely up for debate and both sides have valid points).
I'm sorry people are attacking you and being ridiculous and so close minded they can't even attempt to sympathize with a character or world. I know it's fiction, but like come on. It's not that hard to open your eyes and imagine a world like this and see the real terror and fear they face every day. So yeah, sorry people are being rude to you, don't take it personally. Just people and their lack of ability to properly empathize.

Thank you. I was still stewing about that when I know I shouldn't have been, but your comment made me feel better. :)
If anything, seeing this, I think Hemlock's hate for predators has something of a sunk cost fallacy attached to it. She's hated predators too strongly, for too long, and lost too much to them, to stop now. She probably feels like being anything less than hostile towards predators, even those who aren't immediately threatening anyone, would be a betrayal to her dead family. She hates for them, because they're not around anymore to do it for themselves.

I mean, in this world it wouldn't even be wrong to hate predators for what they are. like, is it right t hate an entire group/ of course not, I think we can all agree that there's few reason to hate an entire group of people. But, even though the predators mostly aren't malicious, they still HAVE to live by killing and eating you. It's not even a sweeping generalization that all obligate carnivores in this universe need to eat meat to survive (just like in our world). Even a nice carnivore still needs to eat, and either way - dead is dead. Whether the person killing you and your family needs to and is nice about it doesn't REALLY matter... the end result is the same. And I'm sure most people here would feel that hatred and anger if it was something they had to deal with (again, especially since preds are as smart as they are - so no wild wolves or tigers killing wanderers randomly, they would be purposefully doing it with knowledge of our intelligence, too).
And then you're right - to not only have an understandable hatred of them, but then run into ones that are nasty and act evil like the mountain lions? She knows what they're capable of and it's terrifying and awful. They murdered and tortured her friends and made her (in her eyes, lesser of two evils) to mercy kill her remaining child. To me, it's not so much sunk cost, it's making sure they can survive.
Like, we followed Rask as the main character so we see and understand his struggles and know he wants to change. Hemlock doesn't know that, and why would she believe him? His kind NEEDS to eat meat, he doesn't have a choice. Rask is a victim, too, and I really feel for him. His story is sad and heartbreaking, because he faces the same fears and risks as the other prey. But he is still someone who needs to kill for food, and like our squirrel friend earlier said... when animals begin to starve, their rationale goes out the window. Even RASK is doubting himself, so how can we expect people like Hemlock and the other herbivores to not?

I'm not denying that Hemlock has a point in that predators pose a risk and yeah, what was done to her by these lions sucks balls... but dude... you should re-read page 113.
Hemlock found Egg who was lost in the woods, forced Egg back to their warren only to brutalize her in front of everyone as an example, smashing her teeth in and all... if Oren hadn't put a stop to it, she would have butchered Egg right there.
Egg was lost in the woods, she hadn't found their hideout, probably wouldn't have ever if Hemlock hadn't dragged her back. Egg might have simply moved on or starved or hell, Hemlock could have preemptively killed her to ensure the safety of the others... but that's not what happened and what Hemlock did, is it?
I'm starting to think that Hemlock survived her ordeal with the lions only to become a lion herself. I mean, how's the lions toying with her kid girl any different than her toying with Egg to show off their new power?

I've reread it all a few times and was actually a patron for a couple months :3 (dunsubbed from it because patreon is NOT friendly trying to read comic pages, especially when multiples are submitted at a time so I'd rather read it in sparse updated that as easy to navigate). Not saying that to be smarmy, just so you know I've been invested in the story for awhile and am not just casually strolling in.
I completely agree Hemlock did something barbaric - two wrongs don't make a right. The lions killing her family and torturing them doesn't mean she is right for doing the same. She has become nasty and hateful and she did something truly awful by beating Egg up and torturing her with the intent to kill. I definitely don't condone her actions. She was caught up in the high of no longer being powerless, no longer being unable to defend herself and lashed out, very wrongly.
That said, I can understand her hatred. Obligate carnivores gotta eat - they can't help it. Even if they're not evil, they live by killing and there's no other choice for them if they want to live. It's the situation of the world. So like ofc the carnivores don't have to be evil, msot of them are just trying to survive, even if there were never any nastiness like the lions, I still don't think it's unjustified to hate predators. Is it right to torture them? No. But wanting to kill them before they kill you makes 100% sense. It's not racism or unfairly labeling them - they 100% at some point will try to kill and eat you so it's not really wrong of them to protect themselves. And to see their friends and family eaten even for survival, of course there would be anger and hatred.
I'm not saying Hemlock is in the right, but is it really so hard to see why she hates predators so much? This is literally a world where carnivores with high intelligence and the same abilities as you need to hunt and eat you. Again, it's insane to me that people are acting like Hemlock is just an irredeemable bigot when she has very real reasons for hating a group of animals that need to eat you to live... it makes 100% sense why there is hatred; not to the degree of being just as nasty and evil (as I feel like Hemlock may be), and want to kill them before they make meals out of you and all your loved ones.

This all is exactly what I was saying in the previous page when I was saying that I cannot sympathize with her character because of all the actions she's done up to that point. She became a monster herself and now has the mark of willing to kill a child to save her own skin.
...she already heard her daughter screaming for mercy while the lions tortured her before finally killing her.
She saw no way to save her son's life. To her, he was already doomed. In desperation, she wanted to save him from the horror and pain she knew he would suffer in the only way she could.
She's not a monster. She's a person like the rest of them. But she's trapped in hate and pain. What she did to Egg was abominable, perhaps as abominable as what the lions did to her daughter. But that doesn't mean she is not a victim, lashing out and knowing no other way to deal with the trauma she's endured. These animals know nothing of psychological health, of the path to healing from trauma. They still have to figure it all out.

since Star_Ringer decided to block me, I guess I'll have to leave my response with you... sorry for that
to Star_Ringer:
dude, you literally started with "I can't wait to see how people still try to 100% vilify her in the comments" - so don't start complaining when people start doing exactly that and point out the reasons of why exactly these people (aka me) vilify her.
I am also neither mocking nor belittling you, I am mocking and belittling Hemlock. I don't take this comic to serious because at the end of the day, its just a comic. its fun to have a casual back and forth in comments every once in a while but ultimately, for me anyways, its all in good fun. if there's anyone that should be mad at me for my little Hemlock impression, it would be Hemlock herself but she's a fictional characters for one and for the second I don't care whether Hemlock likes me or not so I'm okay with her hating me, lol :-P
for what it's worth it: I'm sorry dude. I don't take this shit to serious and assumed the way I chose to respond made that clear but I guess I was wrong so sorry for hurting your feelings, didn't mean to.

Sorry, blocking you wasn't fair.
Your comment came off to me as mocking me because, as a direct response to me, it felt you were implicitly calling me foolish for sympathizing with her. I wasn't lying- this page hit me very strongly, and that hadn't faded when you responded. But I hope you can understand that with everything going on right now, I've developed a...prickly response to callousness in the face of suffering.
Still, I reacted angrily and you didn't deserve that. I apologize.

its okay dude, all is well :)
and yeah, I can see where you're coming from so I guess i didn't handle myself in the best kind of way either... I should probably have written a disclaimer or something like that at the top, lol
anyways, no harm done, dude
sorry again for the misunderstanding ^^;;

Picking several that don't, doesn't negate that statement.
"And you've clearly never experienced actual suffering," way too personal, way too anecdotal: egregiously ignorant. Sounds like you're projecting your own trauma onto someone else and that's unacceptable as fuck, lol.
Last point is subjective: born a slave, Anakin's mother was tortured and killed, Padme's death (which was his cause, through years of struggle against his arrogance and impulsive desire to protect people which led to manipulation by Palpatine) left an even harsher, longer lasting effect on his mind. While not "witcher" deep, it wasn't dark comedy gold, haha.

I tend to agree with you. As you say, in life we see many examples (on the news EVERY day) of people who had it tough earlier in life, but who have allowed it to take away their humanity. They don't empathize, or care, really, about anyone but themselves, and they justify it as "survival of the fittest"..."looking out for #1"...we know the phrases. Fear makes poor choices, and poorer living conditions on this planet. Added to self-delusion (I had to make a tough choice,") Hemlock is a dangerous character.
I would not judge her at all. Seeing what had happened to her other offspring - it was the kindest thing she could do.
Consider - if there is no hope for a pet.. or a loved one - what more could you offer other than an end to the pain. Sadly when cone considers humans strange morals as in 'Gods Purpose' get in the way.

Well no duh she's a hardass! Imagine losing your last two kits (one that ya had to kill to spare from a horrible fate) and being the only survivor. If she didn't become as hard as stone, she would've gone completely mad, probably eaten by an eagle or something by now.
But now, she's become harder and more ruthless because she won't lose another family.
I mean, obviously we don't wanna see her gut poor Rask but if this doesn't paint a crystal clear picture, I don't know what does.

If I'm gonna be honest though, Hemlock is turning from a character I was annoyed by, then hated, then becoming one of my favorite characters in the series...
Kinda becoming less like General Woundwort and more like Avatar Kyoshi.
(Not saying Hemlock was EXACTLY like GW but hopefully ya get my point)

Same... she really needs to cry that one out and get some sort of help to deal with the grief and process it in a healthy way. Clearly she's never told anyone [or almost anyone] about this, so she's bottled up this clearly traumatic event and has completely dealt with it in her own head, alone, all this time.
She needs someone else's help to process through that so she can move on with a more open mind about predators.

There was a M*A*S*H episode like this. Maybe it was the final movie. The one where Hawkeye goes insane and the psych, in order to cure him, forces him to remember when he watched a mother kill her own child because it was making noise and they had to be quiet or they would all get killed.
The best villains have reasons they turned dark. It's so hard to stay light and pure, when the world is so ugly, and it's so easy to allow darkness to take over one's heart.

This comic brings up a lot of opinions about Hemlock and her views on predators and I wish to give mine. Did what happen to her deserve pity? Yes, but that's what had happened to her. With the here and the now it's clear she let that trauma boil and fester into hatred. She would never see a predator as more than a mindless machine that wants to torture and kill until they get bored and then devour. While we the readers can see Rask as someone who lost everything and wishes for a place to feel safe and Egg a poor soul who was mutilated because she was in the wrong place at the worst time, Hemlock sees them as mindless beasts. It will not matter what they do Hemlocks opinion will not change and if given the chance she would kill them. Does Hemlock deserve to be pitied? To an extent yes I feel bad for what happened to her. But I do not pity her as of now for her burning hatred and thirst for blood. As it was put earlier in the comic. Hemlock is a wildfire that will not stop until everything is destroyed until it eventually fizzles out.
Full blown yuck here. Yeah she murders her kid to save her (take that as you will) and still manages to escape. But instead of seeking revenge against the lions (may have but thats in future panels) she decides to hate all preds and save everyone.
Now bear with me but we seen how most of these * tragic evils* somehow have that moment and full turn around but that trope is older and more beaten then a herd of horses. Leave her the hate, her hare trigger, her murder hobo tendencies, she has earned them. She has had chances to be redeemed off camera I bet and what she did to egg and would do to rask clearly shows we can be justified hating her.
Thats why this comic is solid gold..it pushes us, kneads us, stretches us in ways that make us think. No safe choices, no easy picks, its a literal kill or be killed world and something BIG is behind it all. Big and ugly (global shift maybe?). Comics like this are why I collected them decades ago and still have my albedos and critters and such, good comics worth saving like this one clearly will be.

off topic - i somewhat feel the comic poorly reveals whatbthe actual landscape of development for these animals are... rabbits have a f**g forge, weasels have at least started to gather technology such as fire (Rasks uncle), wolves seem to be some naked barbarians no tech, cougars have pretty developed tools.
For some reason it feels like there's an enormous gap between literal early cavemen tech and the late bronze age tools of Oren. one person cannot make a tech jump that big - "one moment im a caveman, next i am making Athenian weapons" - so there may be others? e.g. other groups/species who have developed tools up to that point, where oren got ideas? maybe even oren took ideas from far more developed groups?

I obviously can't look into Teag's head, but she did at one point offer at least a little bit of insight into why this is (then again, it's not really the point of the story). I don't recall the entire wording, but basically predators just never really had a need or want to evolve past what they have. They're fine with the way things are, so why bother to change anything - at least as far as the apex predators go. Prey animals however have a better bit of selection pressure on them.
If you scoot back a couple' pages, Oren learned the "technology" from what he called the Conclave, so it was an uplift for him, while someone else actually developed the original means. I would wager there's probably one or two more settlements like the Conclave in other parts of the world and Oren'sStone Hollow is a budding one, but remember that there were societies that subsisted on very little more than stone age technology up until some 100 years ago, simply because they either chose to do so or just hadn't had contact with anyone (and there still is at least one tribe of people on earth who have never had contact with another human being, though admitedly, they live on an island).
Now, the cougar's learned to make traps to make their lives easier, which is reasonable in the sense that less hunting also means less potential for injury, but the leisure it brings has some unfortunate side effects (as Hemlock and her people had to endure discovering). The world presented in OF is one that is on the cusp of changing and it's currently the prey animals who are bringing this change about for their own safety. As this change spread to other parts of the world, predators will have to adapt in turn, but I doubt we'll have that story told with Rask and the members of Stone Hollow, as changes like that take a lot longer than one or two generations.

development from (not even pointy, as pumas used) sticks to fire, forges, metal ore mining and forgning advanced spears like that would not happen in 100 years.
my point was that the difference seems incredible. if atory is from rasks eyes - yes, we can imagine there may be some tech advanced civilizations and this comic is about nomad lives.
idk but it geels like theres some element or description of citcumstances is missing (maybe deliberately?). its like there could be a hot air balloon in next page and we would accept it.

To those here who wonder why others here cannot feel with her:
No matter what happens to you... It is not right to take it out on those who have NOT done anything to you.
Justify her doings is terrible.
Sure. you can understand why she is like she is.. but still , that does not justify her acting.
to bring it on a meta level: Can you justify and support also the afghan mother who lost her child when her home was bombed by the US forces and now wants to launch a terror act on the U.S.? That is the same thing. Never take out your anger on those who did not do you wrong.
(and to those who start whining now: Yes. her fate is hard. But still. she is doing wrong )

For one I'm (very sure) the vast majority of Americans are not cannibals. For two this is the late stone age/early copper age, Hemlock is arguably in a much less safe situation than an Afghan woman and has much less information, education and resources at her disposal. Thirdly there's a mighty big difference between an airstrike and corralling and entire group of people, horrifically killing them (and in fact making a game out of it) and then eating them.
Obviously there are more major differences but you should see the point.
Hemlock does not have the luxury of being able to take chances, Badgers will absolutely dig into Rabbit warrens to eat their young, Pine Martins will absolutely tear apart small herbivores to eat them. She can't be expected to know on first sight that *these two in particular* are nice and cuddly.
Is she being vicious? Absolutely, it's worrying. Is it completely unwarranted? No.

Florida doesn't have privacy laws that prevent the press from publishing the full and unadulterated reason for your arrest once they're in public record! They don't NEED your name or other private information to make a sensationalist Florida Man headline!
The rest of the country is probably JUST as batshit insane as Florida, they just don't get their insanity in the news because they have laws preventing it!

Which isn't unwarranted, Carnivores killing and eating Herbivores, irrespective of sapience, is normal fare for this world. Hemlock would have to be a colossal idiot to assume that there's 'nice' Carnivores out there.
Egg and (hopefully) Rask are exceptions yes but they further reinforce the rule just by being such extraordinary exceptions.

teagan, i am sincerely sorry for the incredible amount of disrespectful comments you get on your characters and story on FA (i.e. there is always something along the lines of "omg this will clearly end like XY i haaate this kind of plot lmao, omg clearly this makes no sense to me, let me judge ur poor writing, blablabla!").
writing and drawing a comic is SUCH an ASSload of work, it breaks my heart to see so many people belittling and judging it like a product to consume instead of handling it like a work of art. i really enjoy the comic and respect the work put behind it. i hope that makes up a little for the embarassing hemlock-hate.

Seriously, for all the people that make bitchy comments, it's like "I'm sorry you don't like my story, but I'm not holding a gun to your head forcing you to read it".
As for the hate for Hemlock, here's my two cents on the matter.
There are variable levels of it that are actually favorable to the story itself beyond than the "OMG REEEEE"-type comments. Hear me out here. If a story and/or its characters are capable of evoking such emotional involvement from its viewers, isn't this a sign that the author has succeeded in creating a great story? A hallmark of a good story is conflict; if there's no conflict, then the story can become stagnant and boring and people will begin to lose interest quickly. Enter conflict; the character(s) or entity that sparks argument and strife, that goes against the grain. Whether this character is a protagonist, antagonist, or somewhere in-between is irrelevant so long as conflict is created.
Yes, let the viewers dislike or even hate character "X". Let them call for whatever justice or karma that should befall them. People love to hate a story's villain. But only so long as that dislike or hate is a "healthy" level of dislike/hate. (Most) People want to see the villain get their punishment at the end as it simply makes the world 'right'. So long as these feelings are directed toward the character as a being in the world that they exist in, not as the "on paper" character. By that, I mean the character as they exist in their world, but not as a creation of the writer. Once those feelings bleed over into the real world side of the character (as the character exists in the the mind of the writer, how they act and feel, how they are 'designed', etc.), then it becomes too much. Basically, it's would be okay to dislike Hemlock for how she treats Rask or Egg (or several others for that matter), for her aggression, etc. This is a natural response. But its NOT okay to direct those same feelings toward Teagan for "creating such an evil person". Again, stories NEED a conflict/villain whether that conflict/villain be a person, a group or people, or simply an ideal.
You (not *YOU* specifically, just in general) could try to argue that even that is still bad, but here's my rebuttal; if you aren't allowed to feel negative emotions for characters, then by the same right you shouldn't be allowed to feel positive emotions for other characters in the story. If you shouldn't feel a dislike or even a hate toward an antagonist/villain, then you should feel happiness or excitement for the hero. Becoming emotionally attached or connected to the characters of a story is the surest sign that the author has done their job right, that the story they have created a powerful one. If people have that attachment, they want to keep coming back to see what happens next. Did the hero's companion that got badly injured in last chapter's battle pull through? Alright, the villain got captured! Time for justice! Wait, they escaped?! No, hero, you have to stop them! Oh no, <insert "damned if you do damned if you don't" scenario> has happened and now the hero has to choose between saving their best friend or saving the princess/lover/VIP. What will they do? It's these sort of situations and the emotional attachment that people create that make them cheer when good things happen and cry when bad things happen. But its also what makes them, as the readers, keep coming back for more.
I'm not necessarily labeling Hemlock a villain here. She's most certainly an antagonist, but she has been shaped by the world around here and those within it just the same as you and I have been shaped by the world around us, how we grew up, etc. Are her actions toward Rask validated by this or is she going too far? The answer will be different for each person, but consider this: you're at home with your family and burglars consisting of entirely of members from <insert specific gender/race/creed/background/etc> group break in and manage to subdue you and your family. Then then rob your home and badly injure or even kill your family. From that point forward in your life, wouldn't you feel animosity toward that <insert specific gender/race/creed/background/etc> group, even members of said group that were in no possible way involved in what happened to you?
In closing, I'd like to say (specifically to Teagan), I'm absolutely loving this story; the characters, their personal stories, the world setting, simply everything is fantastic! I even became a Patreon member for it because I had to have more, and I only have a very few things I follow on Patreon. No, I'm not even going to hint at spoilers, I hate when people do that shit so I refuse to do it myself.

i can only agree to basically everything you said.
it's okay to dislike or hate fictional characters. the hate for hemlock is just absolutely disproportional, which teagan has also said herself on twitter a while ago. and the disproportional hate is only seen on FA, which has also been stated by teagan. i have to agree, and it's a noteworthy observation. it personally annoys me when people base their hatred of hemlock on simply false observations, like someone stating that hemlock killed her child not to save the child from the suffering a slow death, but for hemlock to selfishly buy time for herself. that... that is just critical lack of reading comprehension on s-tier level. i don't even know what to say to that, to be honest. people are entitled to misunderstand a story if they want to, i guess.
everyone is entitled to dislike the comic as a whole, or in parts, for whatever reason. i just wish that people would either keep that to themselves in this specific case of an indy artist comic, since no one forces them to read it. OR to voice it in a reasonable manner. and calling teagan a bad writer because they hate a character, or because they "can like totally see where the plot is heading and lmao i haaaate plots like that ugh" or "this world building makes noooo sense what so ever, by my personal standards, in this comic that is not obligated to my personal standards in any way, SO THIS COMIC SUCKS" - that is neither reasonable nor respectful. and i am truly sorry teagan gets so many of these comments.

It's because of how Hemlock is acting and how it stems from her backstory that I love her as a character; she's so complex! And I love complex characters, especially antagonists and villains. Again, not calling Hemlock a villain here (definitely an antagonist though), just speaking generally. A bit off-topic, but related; look at a lot of the new Marvel movies and how they tweaked the background stories for some of the villains; Vulture, Mandarin, even Thanos. Originally, they were simple "I'm evil because I just want to kill people and/or rule the world" type villains. But with their new backstories, they've become MUCH more complex. There are legitimate reasons why they are 'evil' now and why they're doing what they are. Heck, Vulture wasn't even that 'bad' of a badguy, just stuck in a shitty situation that he really only had one way out of.
But I digress. As far as Hemlock is concerned, just look at what happened to her kits; that would mentally scar or even break even the hardest of people, being forced to endure something like that, and it's painfully obviously how deep Hemlock's own mental scars are. It not something you can just walk away from or shake off over time; that's a pain that she'll carry with her to the day she dies. It's just a matter of whether or not she chooses to see that there are some, if only a handful, of predators that are willing to find some way to coexist with the prey species without having to kill one another and continue to survive. Much like Egg finding eggs and Rask catching fish. And once she allows herself just that little bit of acceptance, she might even see the benefit of even smaller predators like Rask being on their side; he has a predator's hunting senses and instincts that could prove very helpful toward the defense of the hollow. But something tells me that there's a long, LONG road between now and that end result, if it ever comes at all.

I like the darker tone of your comic, I really do. It's startling and brutal sometimes, it's very captivating and I wonder how your story unfolds and your characters develop.
Generally speaking:
It's YOUR story. You know the plot entirely and characters at best and decide when to reveal story fragments or character's intentions. I always think it's rather unfair if some people pretent to know others' characters better than the creator themself.

I read that page some time ago, when I joined the patreon because I was to addicted to this story to wait anymore. And when I read this part... I cried. I truly did.
I'm not the type who cries a lot (and no I'm not bragging or anything, I really don't), especially over fiction and especially comics. There's always a part of me that tells me that it's fiction, so even when I'm at my most shocked or saddened, it's never too much.
And the weird thing is... it was the case this time again. I knew it was fiction, I didn't felt sad or hurt on a mental level... and still I felt that massive uneasiness in the back of my mind, and my body was reacting like it was on autopilot.
Do you know how weird it is to be in front of your computer and collect your tears with your fingers to watch the drops, trying to make sense of what's happening?
It took me a few minutes to understand. This page, this story, was so well done, so powerful, it had overridden my intellect and triggered an instinctive empathic reaction from me. It had literally smashed through my mind to hit me straight in the feels!
It was weird. Kinda creepy too. But one thing is sure : that comic is gold and you're as fucking good at storytelling as you are at drawing (which says a lot).

To the author: I really like this comic, no matter if I find flaws (at least what I consider flaws)
Right now I see no flaws. I just wonder why some people hate this comic and not the character that is making wrong decisions. Hemlock is, to me, a character I cannot sympathise with at, no matter how hard her fate has been. maybe that is my morality, maybe you aim for something to happen later. Just keep going. I just try to analizy things sometimes and writing character archs can be hard. I have a feeling how Hemlocks story will evolve, but I will see
