Difficult is right, but not impossible.
Focus is not always required. There are multiple ways to advance.
A) Memory. Dying and remembering where all the ambushes or traps are so they cannot get you later
B) Guides or Cheating. Reading up guides or getting an FAQ that explains all the traps and monsters and such in detail will help you a lot. Some monsters have ways of ending your ass in one hit, but knowing ahead of time will help you a shit load.
C) Grinding. ITs a lot easier to tackle the game if you grind up levels and get really pumped up on souls before advancing to harder levels.
