And so, with the last two episodes, Bojack Horseman finally comes to the end.
Second to last one had me on the edge of my seat. And, well, the show made it look like he had died, and as much as that would have killed me, I was okay with that one. But the real finale kind of just softens the blow which I really felt tame and undersold sees a conclusion to many things, and yet, the overall message is a lot similar to something Dr. Manahattan said to Ozymandias in Watchmen:
"Nothing ever ends".
Bojack sees everything crumble around him as he serves his sentence and accepts the consequences for his crimes, PC gets married, PB comes to accept that marriage and committment really aren't his bag, Todd becomes more of Psuedo-sage advisor, in addition to being that much more independent and self-capable of anything, and as bookend to how the show started, Diane, now married to Guy, walks out of Bojacks life, but he gets closure and the two of them leave on amicable terms. Nothing since watching Plague Dogs had reduced me to indifference and sadness and tears as much. And it isn't entirely bittersweet. One cruel thing about the gullible and superficial media culture in this show is that, they practically hated Bojack for what he did, then a while later the whole thing is forgotten and the brand new movie called "The Horny Unicorn" is now basically a smash hit. (For a visual illustration and demonstration of this, look up Vance Waggoner, who seems to the sort of character that has as just a much a toxic personality Bojack did for the first 4 seasons. He sought Bojack and encouraged him to do "The Horny Unicorn" to reassess who his real friends are, and also because THU will automatically be such a smash hit and give him lots of money just to drive all the haters crazy.) But thankfully Bojack, for all his flaws, is a little better, or at least, I hope he is, because the struggles with himself continue, nobody belongs anywhere, nothing is the same anymore, everything is worse now, and "Nothing ever ends." Life's a bitch, and some die, but for those who live, you just go on living.
I'm not on board with Nihilism, because at its' core, the message is essentially, "Everything is meaningless, except the things you do". But damn this show really wracked me helplessly. Particularly the direction and narrative flow and visuals of the Second to Last One, essentially spelling out that everything ends when you die, and there's no other side to see. All you get as a reward is a complete and permanent cessation of self, nothing remains, you are gone. Past, Present, and Future, rendered null and void. (Granted, that is entirely subjective and from Bojack's viewpoint. The entirety of TVFHD was Bojack's dream.)
In any case, as much as I wanted Bojack to accept the consequences for his actions, I really felt for him in the end. He's screwed up, but he will continue to screw up, fall down, then get up and try again. As many times as it takes.
