In this context (a generic, game-like fantasy setting), McClaw has a regular employer -- a group of reclusive wizards calling themselves "Oracle". He's been bound (it always finds him) to a magic messenger bag that receives messages he's supposed to deliver, which sometimes results in him being "loaned out" for various adventures.
