The little Skorbunny turned in his bed for a short while before seating himself up. The window to his room was still a stark black matching the night sky outside, the only illumination being from the digital clock on his bedside table. While he couldn't do the math in his head of how long he'd actually been asleep for he knew it was still a long way before morning, yet he felt as full of energy as he would in any part of the day.
Hesitantly, he pulled away his bed sheets and looked at his night-time diaper and with a short but relieved sigh it was still dry, which will earn him another sticker to put on his calendar. No longer distracted from that he just spent the next few minutes staring at the ceiling to his room, half wondering if the state of sleep might wash over him soon, or otherwise just reminiscing about the day he just left behind.
When at once through the remaining muddle of slumber and shattering it entirely a memory came back of the family coming home with a large black plastic suit-case in tow and a plastic bag filled with several clam-shell cases. His family had rented a Super Natudo system this weekend and several games, setting it up in his bedroom as a celebration for him finishing his school year.
Excitedly he threw back his quilt, it landing on the bed and against the wall and he slid himself down to his bedroom floor. The sudden thud as his feet hit the carpet made him realize he should probably be a bit more clandestine if he's going to sneak a bit more play time in when he should very clearly still be asleep. He bowed his body forward and slowly shuffled his feet against the carpet, making his way to the TV across the room, the only sound coming from the dragging of his feet long the floor and a faint crinkling of his diaper. As he got to the television he kneeled down and felt into the darkness until his fingers bumped into a loose game cartridge before picking it up and trying to read it's label in the faint light coming from his digital clock's LEDs. He could barely make out what looked like the sharp and craggy font that made up the logo for 'Super Minccino RPG'. "Yeah! This is the one!" The Skorbunny thought to himself as he remembered he was ushered to bed not long after he had just beaten a rather diabolical dungeon and he was on his way to explore a new area of the game.
The Skorbunny slowly inserted the cartridge into the top of the console, the sound of the plastic components sliding along each other seemed amplified by the silence otherwise only broken by the wind rushing against the trees outside, until the cart locked in with a contradictory sharp yet dull 'Clunk!'. He then looked up at the TV, it being a small, old cathode ray tube his father had in the family office room but was now handed-down as it were to his own bedroom. The little one pulled on the knob that controlled both the power and volume but as then suddenly remembered he had the volume on rather high when he was playing before bed, and just as suddenly twisted the knob counter-clockwise allowing only a scant second of white noise to fill the sound volume of the room.
The sudden brightness of the TV however did hurt the Skorbunny's eyes, but he adjusted soon enough to the image of static on the television. He finally reached down and with a fairly audible 'Clack' the Super Natudo' came to life, a small red light turning on from the front of the console and the television screen turning back as the game shuffled through various logos. The Skorbunny shuffled back to a set at the side of his bed and sat himself down, grabbing the controller at his feet and watched in a youthful awe the introductory demo of the game. Although the television was silent he could still remember the fun and rambunctious notes of the song that accompanied the image before him, now bathing the room in a soft blue glow...
And thus he played for several hours, only once stopping to get himself a glass of water from the kitchen downstairs, until he could see in the window outside a mixture of a dark, soft blue and a faint red that accompanied the rising sun. He knew then he was long overdue for sleep. Reversing his ritual from long before he turned off the game system and managed to crawl himself back to bed, hoping none would be the wiser of his night-time escapades. This time he felt no issues falling back to sleep.
So this picture is slew of experiments as I'm slowly getting back into art again. First I'd been meaning to try drawing a Skorbunny for awhile, and I also wanted to try my hand at thinner outlines which I really havn't done for quite some time. I was worried at first if with thinner lines I'd need to do more detail, but it seems to work just fine with characters who are simpler in design in the first place. Another but later intentional detail as I imagined the scenario of a late-night gaming Skorbunny was the intense shading which I took a bit of inspiration of a certain animated series, starting with a completely black overlay for the shade before using a light blue, soft brush for the light coming from a harsh light source. The background I admit it a bit lackluster and hardly by best effort, but I got to take this re-entry into art one step at a time.
This'll probably be my last art upload for the year as I got my own plans tonight, but I do wish to take this time to thank all of those leaving comments and favoriting my art of late. It's encouraged me a lot to continue getting back into this and I'm kind of glad my skills haven't atrophied as much as I feared over the last few years. I wish you all a happy end to your year and decade and let us hope for an even better one in the years to come!
