The Master System landed squarely in the third-generation of home systems and originally hit shelves in Japan in 1985 as the Sega Mark III. If you will recall, 1985 also saw the global sensation that was Mario hit in a big way and the rest is history where that is concerned.
It was originally released in 1985 as the Sega Mark III in Japan. After being redesigned prior to its North American launch, the console was renamed Master System and released in 1986 in North America, 1987 in Europe, and 1989 in Brazil. The redesigned Master System was also released in Japan in 1987. On June
There are three confirmed "sets" of North American Master System; early consoles distributed by Sega, late 80s consoles distributed by Tonka, and a third set for the redesgined Master System II, also distributed by Sega. Canada changed packaging when the US changed distributors, but all consoles in that country were distributed by Irwin Electronics.
Contrary to popular belief, until the advent of the Sega Master System II, Sega did not call the console the "Sega Master System" in North America. Instead the console was referred to as the "Sega System", a rather vague and confusing title which was inevitably scrapped. The console unit itself is often referred to as the "Power Base" (similar to the NES' "Control Deck"), though for unknown reasons the text printed on the top of the unit reads "Master System/Power Base". The "Master System" name clearly stuck, and became the official title for the console in later revisions.
The launch games was very little to start off with it depend on which system set you where buying at the time one is the The Sega 'Base' System that only came with the controllers and one packin game Hang-On & Astro Warrior and the other The Sega 'Master' System that comes with two controllers, a Light Phaser Gun one packin game Hang-On & Safari Hunt.
My first time getting this was late 86 after me and my family moved to Brooklyn at the time and saw it at a Family Discount Store that sells lots of home items, toys and games and saw it for $119 and I like the box art and also the Light Gun looks cool so I bought it and got some games and it.
There are an estimated 360 officially licensed games released for the Master System across six major regions: Japan, USA, Europe, Australia, Korea and Brazil.
