It was a warm Autumn day in the southern home of Duckers and Mellony O’Ducky. It had been over three years since they had returned to where they had met, fell in love, and decided their love was more powerful than their combined families’ displeasure over their union.
“It’s so nice to be welcome home again,” Mellony remarked as she rubbed at her noticeable ‘baby bump’ on her tummy.
Duckers supported their first child, Yosh, over his shoulder as the two made their way to Mellony’s family home.
“It’s good to feel welcomed back,” he added while gently patting his son’s diapered bottom. “Yosh will get to know his grandparents and we can proudly share how we are expecting our second child.”
Mellony looked over to see how comfortable their dino-duck son appeared in his father’s wings. She was definitely happy that Yosh would get to know the extended family but also felt a hint of guilt as she had laid him in an undersized egg. The stress of being told how her marriage to Duckers was not what her all Yoshi family approved of taking its toll and nearly causing a mislaying of their first child. Fortunately, Yosh made it through the nesting phase of his development and hatched. However her bulging belly certainly showed how their second egg was going to be laid at a size larger than twice that of the one Yosh came out of.
Duckers gestured towards the front door of Mellony’s parents’ house.
“Here we go,” he stated while holding their slumbering son close. “After you.”
The motherly, green Yoshi took in a deep sniff of the familiar smell of her family’s home before heading towards the door and giving it a merry series of knocks.

The arrival of the hybrid family caught the attention of one of the more curious and adventurous neighbor children.
“Shucks!” the young beaver called out as he rushed into his home. “Ma! Pa! I think we have new neighbors!”
The mother was first to appear.
“Careful, Cody!” she scolded as the screen door the baby beaver had entered in through slammed shut. “What did your pa and I tell you about getting on so recklessly?”
Cody pulled at the waistband of his cloth-like, disposable diaper.
“Sorry, ma,” he apologized. “I am just a might bit excited to meet the new kid.”
Cody’s father joined his wife and son in the family’s mud room.
“Well what do you know?,” he stated with a smile. “Them Yoshies finally got over their prejudice and let their kin back in.”
Cody excitedly slammed his tail upon the hardwood floor.
“can I go on over and play with the new kid?” he asked with the most adorable facial expression only an innocent toddler could muster. “I’ve been hankering to have someone to romp around with.”
The parents looked at each other, smiled, and nodded in unison.
“You get on over there!” the father cheered. “Show that northerner some southern fun!”
SLAM!
Cody’s mother was going to tell him to be careful but the eager beaver was already gone after, yet again, allowing the screen door to slam shut.

Yosh awoke from a crib he had been placed into as a furry bucktoothed face stared at him from the other side of the bars.
“SQUACK!” he cried as he quickly moved to the other side of the crib.
Cody couldn’t help but let out a hearty laugh as he smacked his tail upon the carpeted floor.
“You sure do startle,” he giggled while jumping up, grabbing the top of the crib bars, and using his weight to pull them down. “How’s about we go play?”
Yosh was confused as his mind was still waking up and trying to make sense of all that was happening at such a quick pace.
“Nishi?” he asked as he knew only his older, orange-colored Yoshi pal would surprise him like this.
“Nishi?” baffled Cody as he leapt into the crib and took hold of Yosh’s hand. “The name’s Cody!”
A chubby red Yoshi came into the room who was followed by both Mellony and Duckers.
“Already making a ruckus?” the hearty red Yoshi more stated than asked. “That’s my nephew, Yosh and these are his parents.”
Mellony looked a bit surprised upon getting a look at the young beaver.
“Nice to meet you,” she greeted while making her way to pick up her overstimulated son. “I suppose you’d like to go out and play with Yosh?”
“As sure as biscuits go with gravy!” the eager beaver replied.
The motherly Yoshi noticed her son had soaked through his diaper and needed cleaned up.
“Well, then,” she cooed. “Let me get Yosh all cleaned up and you two can go play around the neighborhood.”
“I can’t believe you’re still in diapers,” Yosh’s uncle stated. “A kid your age ought to be using the potty by now.”
Cody grinned as he leapt out of the crib.
“But Yosh there is still in diapers,” he replied. “And you’d probably still be in diapers if any still fit you, Mr. Nibbles.”
Mr. Nibbles glared towards the small beaver.
“Watch what you say, youngin’!” he snapped.
“What I say wrong?” wondered Cody. “I always see you out on your porch swing sittin’, eatin’, and drinkin’.”
Duckers folded his wings and gave Mr. Nibbles a look that only someone who may still hold a slight grudge against could give.
“Never you mind what I do!” grumped the red Yoshi. “Now get!”

Once Yosh was changed and dressed in his socks and shoes, Cody eagerly lead the young dino-duck outside.
“You think they’ll be alright?” worried Mellony.
“They’ll be fine,” assured her mother while getting a feel for her daughter’s baby bump. “Cody is always getting off around here by himself and he’s just fine.”
“Sounds like an orange Yoshi my son plays with up north,” added Duckers. “There’s no way Cody could get Yosh into more mischief than what Nishi does.”
Mellony sighed.
“I suppose you’re right,” she agreed. “I just can’t help but worry about my little feather-face.”
“He’ll be fine,” further assured Mellony’s father. “We keep close eye on our little one’s around here.”
Duckers rolled his eyes.
“Yeah,” he said. “I’ll never forget when you started to lob eggs at me when you first saw me kiss your daughter near the lake.”
The yellow Yoshi beamed as he patted Duckers on the head.
“What father doesn’t look out for his daughter?” he replied. “The fact you manned up despite coming off like such a sissy by running off with our daughter definitely made me reconsider how I felt about you.”
“Thanks,” the yellow duck replied simply.
“So,” Mellony’s mom smiled. “How’s about we get planning that long overdue baby shower? Mrs. O’Ducky is going to be over soon and we have both made some really juicy plans to make up for how we treated you both so unkindly.”
***
Meanwhile, Cody was already off showing Yosh all of his favorite places to romp around in that had been retaken by the land and ripe for exploration.
“This here’s a fine place to play around!” cheered Cody as he gestured towards the old shed. “Maybe we’ll find us some cool old stuff to play with?”
Yosh was nervous but also eager to see what the charismatic beaver had to show him.
“Sounds like fun,” he replied while fidgeting with his fingers.
Cody tagged Yosh on the shoulder.
“Race ya’!” he called while scampering ahead.
“Hey!” quacked Yosh as he gave chase. “Wait for me!”

This was but the start of what became a semiannual series of adventures where Yosh and Cody would build their friendship in the back woods of his parents’ home town.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:
As I wrote this story I got quite nostalgic. As a result, as with lots of my stories, this one took on a mind of its own and went so far from where I initially intended it to go.
First, I never did properly explain why Yosh was so small compared to his baby sister, winry. Well, as I learned, there are egg laying creatures who can lay different-sized eggs depending on how they feel about their mate. The most notable is how female blue-footed boobbies react to the males they make eggs with. How they feel about the mate can impact the size of the egg laid.
Duckers and Mellony are both from warmer climates in the south. However there was not a whole lot of support for their 'hybrid relationship'. So they ran off against the wishes of their families to start their own.
As time passed, both families realized they had made a mistake and welcomed back the outcast family members. This allowed Yosh to meet his grandparents for the very first time.
Cody is Lanny's character but, as I wrote this story, I realized how much Cody would be equivalent to a real life friend I looked forward to seeing during special occasions and over the summer for roughly 15 years. Seeing Cody as a character who could give that extra element of RL relation was too good to pass up.
So, now with a story, you get some extra details on the O'Ducky family, Cody and Yosh's friendship, and how I managed to find a nice tie-in with a wonderful childhood experience that made me ever eager to reach summer vacation.

More than a month late but here I am Yosh!
A really nice and warm family story. Looks like Cody will have a great friendship with our small, adorable and kind duck. At least he is already enjoying it a lot even if Yosh is too young, just imagine when both get bigger, they will love to play together!
When I start to feel the environment of a kind family reunion and the neighbors of probably a calm and peaceful neighborhood I felt a really warm and cozy sensation that I usually don't experience. I really loved how both families interacted and how Cody was so excited to meet the new neighbors. Honestly, I have thousands of troubles with my neighbors, they always do things that bother me a lot and I wish that more than 85% of them left our neighborhood, so... I haven't really experienced what happens in this story, not even close... But sounds really good. Your story and the covert art reminded me a lot about the TV show called Franklin. You've probably heard of it. The interactions between the children of the neighborhood in that show were pretty similar to this story for me. The only thing that surprised me a bit was that unfair discussion with the uncle. Those typical familiar discussions between youngs and olds where olds always win because they have the power... I have hated that my entire life and honestly sometimes I feel that I should take revenge for those situations because of how unfair they've been... So, reading it on a story wasn't the most pleasurable feeling.
This short story was really good. Warm and calm as always Yosh. Great job!

It means a lot to me to hear your thoughts on how my stories make you feel. It helps me to see the story in a way that would be if you were there watching the story unfold in the neighborhood of Cody and Yosh's grandparents and other relatives.
Growing up, my real life was filled with a lot of unfair double standards. Most of these were from my father who, despite being like a tyrant when it came to my sister and I getting through public school, keeping up on our medications, etc., allowed himself to get addicted to alcohol and cocaine.
My father had a number of chances to save himself from his addictions. He even had a doctor want him to go in for a study to monitor his heart. However my father thought he knew better and, because of this, he passed away almost 12 years ago. This was when his grandson was 18 months old.
I did not know the extent of my father's drug use until after he died. However I vowed to make sure I never did anything to show my son I did not follow the same rules I tell him to follow.
Some stories I write bring out this part of how I have had some really unfriendly and hypocritical family members. Though it is meant as nothing more than a way to show a Slice Of Life that I work hard to not allow myself to justify. There are bad people and there are even family members who do awful things. However happiness can still be found. We can also do better than those who are supposed to be our positive role models.
***
The reason Yosh has a story of his grandparents and extended family not wanting his mom and dad together is kind of a refereance to how, when my parents had me, they were accused of all sorts of terrible things. They were told it was entirely their fault by both sides of the family that I was born with Glaucoma and would go blind. It tore my mother apart.
However, like this story, some family did come around. Most notably my grandparents. I have very fond memories of both sets of grandparents and got to see how they sought redemption for their past through treating my sister and I better than they had even treated our parents.
Though, rest assured, stories that make reference to this past of mine will be rare and far between. Art can imitate life and, well, this was one of those moments. The next time with Cody will be just good warm fun. :)

Interesting. I was guessing that somehow the story was related to your life. I didn't have an idea about how hard it has been to you Yosh. I'm really sorry. Anyway, this story shows a really warm and adorable side of the family and that's really great. I'm just sensitive to unfairness you know... I hate those movies where the goods are accused and things like that.
