“You’d never think a battle had occurred here,” stated Yosh as he found a dry spot by the fire to sit and drink his hot chocolate.
“That is our duty,” replied Hartford while sipping from his hot chocolate. “Just as you paint pictures with your words, our regiment provides visual confirmation that the demons are not gaining ground in our war against them.”
Yosh, who was an officer within the company that Captain , Tacki now lead, had no aspirations of advancing beyond his current rank. He had delighted in learning the power of the written word and believed using his education and talent with it would be the best way to aid his people in its ongoing war against the invading demonic forces.
Hartford had once outranked Tacki. However the blue jay had made some poor choices during a major battle a few months back. There were unnecessary losses along with a potential to have lost the entire company if Tacki had not pushed the blue jay aside to take command.
“Do you still have hard feelings towards Tacki?” the dino-duck asked.
Hartford sighed and slowly shook his head.
“No,” he replied. “I choked during a crisis and holding a grudge against the one who saved all our lives is no way for someone of my rank to behave.”
There was a short pause as the two slowly sipped at their drinks. The ambient sound of the fire boiling the pot of water hung above it made the nip in the early Spring air seem to go away. It also didn’t hurt that this was the first day in over a week that the higher ranking blue jay could get some time with the lower ranking officer.
Yosh was elated when he was assigned to be within the Sunnyside Fusiliers. His parents had hoped he would not enlist in the army and, initially, he wasn’t going to. However the newspaper articles he read about the progress the army was making in defending Maeria from the demonic forces made him believe he could best help through being a Scribe in the military.
“Do you regret having been assigned as my Page?” Hartford asked.
Yosh looked to the sky for a moment.
“I have no regrets,” he replied while facing his superior. “War is not all rainbows and butterflies. None of Maeria’s children should ever feel they are above being capable of doing as much good as they do bad. It is the balance that makes us who we are and what we fight to retain.”
Hartford finished off his cup of hot chocolate and went to reach for another packet of mix from within the supply bag.
“And you still feel standard issue diapers are better than those you had as a civilian?” he teased while his wing touched upon one of the spare briefs tucked within the bag.
“As I wrote in a recent article for the recruitment team,” stated Yosh. “The military ensures its soldiers feel snuggly, soft, safe, and secure in the face of those who would ravage our land.”
The blue jay laughed.
“You’re a funny guy, Yosh,” he said while stirring his second cup of hot chocolate. “I’m sure you left out how you feel about the uniforms.”
The dino-duck blushed.
“Protection is one thing,” he stated while admiring how he had been dressed. “Though the only garment of clothing I’ve ever liked covering my arms and legs so firmly was my footie sleeper.”
Hartford laughed again.
“One zipper is easier than all those tricky buttons, right?” he taunted.
Yosh blushed a little more.
“I grew up with a very good caretaker robot,” he added. “She helped me learn to change myself and work simple zippers and clasps. However I never quite got down anything like these uniforms require.””
“Lucky for you that the field medics are all skilled in both dressing and changing,” smiled Hartford. “Though I’m just as grateful for how they are able to return lost spirits to their bodies before the demons can feed on them.”
There was another pause where the pair both seemed to reflect on their situation.
“Yosh?” asked Hartford. “Do you feel we will ever be able to put an end to the invasion?”
The dino-duck thought for a moment.
“I’ve had time to review reports from all of the companies within our regiment,” he stated. “Advancements in anti-demon weaponry is starting to reveal how to trap, halt, and totally banish entire hordes.”
“Has their initial spawn point been uncovered yet?” pursued Hartford. “It is only when we can keep them from entering our world that we shall finally achieve victory.”
Yosh smiled.
“There is an elite force being assembled as we speak,” he proudly stated. “There is talk of an ‘Operation Night Light’ that will be lead by this team in which will, through support of the other regiments, press beyond anywhere we’ve been before. They will use the latest in technological advancement to uncover the various hives and gates used by the demons to calculate ‘Zone Zero’. They will then bring back all battle data for the upper brass to review, along with our research teams, to improve our weapons, battle tactics, and finally put an end to this seemingly endless war.”
Hartford winked.
“And this isn’t just more of that propaganda stuff you are told to share to maintain morale?” he asked while trying to hold back how he wanted so badly to believe it.
“Sir,” quacked Yosh. “Do you really feel I would present you, or any superior officer, with data that I had not properly analyzed for any and all traces of deception?”
Hartford laughed.
“You’re fun to ruffle-up,” he teased. “Though it is hard to think this war could be won during even our lifetimes.”
“It is proven that each generation has made more progress than the last,” stated Yosh. “Even if not in our lifetime, we will prevail and Maeria will be free.”
The blue jay playfully moved his bare talons upon the thawing snow.
“Then let us fight for that day together,” he happily said. “I do enjoy our time together to discuss all that is and was within our company.”
Yosh sat up to get another packet of hot chocolate mix.
“As do I, Lieutenant,” he replied. “But, for now, I do hope it is alright we just enjoy this moment of peace before our next assignment.”
“Yosh,” Hartford replied with a wave of his wing. “It’s just Hartford for now. We’ll resume the formalities when we are due back at camp.”
The two went on to continue their morning meeting prior to being briefed by Commander tacki on what the day’s duties were to be.

It was interesting to read your take on a day in the life of two Guards-cubs. I never thought about a push to find the one point the demons are using to get into the world. Then name, Zone Zero has a nice ring to it. Sadly, it's the entire world that's at risk of invasion. The mistakes of the civilization before them ensured that the space between the cubs' and demons' dimensions can't be separated by cutting one strand. It's more of a permanent residual field encapsulating the whole world that allows the demons to jump the gap between worlds.
Still, the cubs don't know that, and it seems like a decent place to start to finally ending the demon invasions once and for all.
I'll certainly keep what you wrote here in mind, should I ever continue Children of Maeria. I'll definitely make Yosh an ensign if I ever get to the point in time that you just depicted in your tale. It was super cool to see you write this story Yosh. It definitely made my night.

I'm glad you found this a good read, Tacki. I was in a mood to put pen-to-paper and worked to take all my memories, along with the notes I had from you, to create a little Slice of Life between Yosh and Hartford.
It's quite a bit of exposition, but I wanted to also see if I could get others curious to look back at some of the original work. CoM was a pretty big part of what I had come to really enjoy in which only you could do. So it felt right to, at my best, to give people a glimpse into a world that fascinated me.
Hopefully I did not take too many creative liberties. I tried to be as accurate as possible.
Now I can remember how there are actually three incarnations of Yosh. The original, Equestrian, and Maerian. :)

Hehe, it's fine. I'm glad that I have such an awesome handful of people that are fans of the little glimpse I showed of my world. I wish I could focus entirely on it. I want to put out a small 25 page comic of another project I've been working on. I'm very close to beginning it, but things keep getting in the way. Death in the family, a possible leak in the roof, and someone breaking into our shed twice in the past month. Real life can be a pain sometimes, as you full well know. So thanks for letting me revisit your vision of Children of Maeria.
Again late... Sorry...
Hmmm, War talking. Hard, complicated, heart and will breaking, but hey! With the right atmosphere and writing, warm, calm and cozy. I have to say that I wasn't expecting a story like this from you Yosh. But of course, I was expecting a calm and peaceful environment (at least during the conversation that takes place in the story).
Real wars are really hard and have taken probably all the good and bad things of our race at the same time. But fictional wars are always a great way to tell an interesting and complex story, mixing tons of elements, situations, feelings, and personalities. Those conversations that take place before a big battle or when the times are simply calm due to the army preparation are really interesting, at least on movies, those are usually moments where you pay attention to any single word because of how dramatic it is.
As always, really great job with this short story Yosh.

I thank you very much for taking the time to read this story. It is my way of showing appreciation to the very first person who welcomed me here on Fur Affinity,
Tacki.
Tacki is a padded friend who likes to study historical battles. He does very high quality uniform designs. He also had a comic series, which this story is based after. Tacki was not able to finish the comic. However what he got done is really good and cute despite the war element.
I liked writing this scene because, when Tacki had to stop making the comic, he introduced the Blue Jay, Hartford. I told Tacki I wanted to have Yosh be friends with Hartford and, over the years, we have had some fun putting these two together. :)

Hmmm. I see. Pretty interesting. I'm not interested in history in that deep way but it is still pretty nice. As I was saying, wars can give you thousands of stories from thousands of angles. Just take a moment to look at how TV shows or series of movies where the war is a main element are really popular.
It is also really nice that you wanted to thank your very first friend here on FA. You have certainly a big heart Yosh :3

Something interesting, if you do not mind me sharing, is how my grandfather was in the United States Navy during World War 2. He was on a submarine as a photographer who validated when US submarines sunk enemy ships. (His submarine also would rescue survivors to be held until they could be placed in temporary custody until the war ended between the US and Japan)
My other grandfather fought in Europe during World War 2. He spent a lot of time in Austria. He told me stories of how captured German soliders would help him go hunting for deer to cook for everyone.
My father was in the US Navy during the 1970s. However he was a medic and also did not see any action.
I wanted to join the United States Navy to keep the family tradition alive. I also enjoy the water and would love to be out to sea. However nobody with a disability can join the United States military. So I was rejected despite the military seeing I scored very well on our mandatory High School testing for the military.
I later tried to become a part of the US navy through taking a non-combat position where I would help Navy personnel with day-to-day life issues and documentation. However, sadly, my disability caused an automatic rejection.
Now, for something funny, I am guessing one of the reasons for not wanting a blind person in the Navy was because I could not safely use a gun. However, in the state I live in, I could walk into any seat of government building and get a license to carry a hand gun.
So, overall moral of this story, United States military and gun laws are dumb. :)
