From the moment Kym first laid eyes on Reynard, she had a crush on him though Rey didn't necessarily return the interest or affection quite on the level she desired. He saw her more as a younger sister than a romantic interest. Thinking she needed more in common with the fox, she took it upon herself to learn the basics of hand to hand combat, fencing, and the use of other weapons. It wasn't long before she actually had cause to use her newfound skills in place of her magic and Reynard recommended that Kym be allowed to enroll in the weapons classes as well as the magic classes she was already attending. While it was uncommon for students to take up more than one discipline, it wasn't unheard of and certainly not with Reynard, who was already attending classes in all the disciplines, recommending her. Kym took well to the training without missing a beat in her magic classes and along with the strength and confidence she'd gained, she'd also earned the respect of just about everyone in the school - student, faculty and administration alike.

Her original goal of becoming involved with Reynard did happen for a time but Kym realized it was more infatuation and the pair are more the brother and sister that Reynard felt they were meant to be. Kym took it in stride and turned her attentions elsewhere though Rey was more affected than he would ever let on, not wanting to spoil Kym's chances of finding the right guy for her. As a celebrated upperclassmare, Kym serves as a shining example of what determination and perseverance can acheive and more students have started applying for multiple disciplines as they realize their skills cannot be contained in the original, rigid class structure traditionally followed before Kym's time.

Wow, is it ever difficult to write some of these descriptions without giving too much away.
