Those bat wings reminded me of a moogle -- which gave me an idea for a RPG setting! One where moogles are werebats that turn into their iconic form much like a kitsune turns into a fox. And, just to make the pom-poms make sense, they're like the magic jewels kitsune have. If you grab it, the moogle can't transform! Powerless! And has no choice but to convince the thief to give it back.
