The Leviathon Class is the backbone of the MPUN surface fleet, serving as a multirole vessel with roles such as anti-submarine warfare, surface combat, naval invasion support, disaster relief, patrol, and many other capabilities. The first of her class, the MPNS Leviathon was laid down in 2199 and was completed just before the turn of the century that same year. She is designed to replace the obsolete and aging fleet of Interdictor class cruisers previously used by the navy. Although the older vessels were technically superior in firepower, they did not take advantage of the multitude of new technological breakthroughs discovered within the last century, such as a reliable railgun system which no longer required propellant to fire ammunition and a new solid-hydrogen engine which rendered both nuclear and diesel options obsolete. A total of 150 of the Leviathon class were ordered: a total of 100 for the home surface fleet and 50 for the fleet on Konstador. Although the importance of having a powerful surface navy has declined over the last decades due to the recent unification of all of the major powers on the planet making the need for a strong surface fleet outdated, the capability and usefulness of surface combatant ships are still not to be underestimated as they can be very efficient in patrolling the oceans for the ever-growing Yutan pirate threat, and can aid in planetary defense. The Leviathon class has also been proven to be a very valuable asset to have by the MPU troopers on the planet of Konstador as their compact yet potent firepower allows for the perfect platform to mount assaults as well as defending certain strategic locations on the planet.
