Finally finished making those prop grenades for the upcoming ACFI con... maybe. Well, good enough anyway. I think they turned out rather well. The green paint darkened a little bit since the first post I made. I guess some drying time made the difference. I like the color now a lot better. The raw float on the right shows what I started with and the rest are different angles of the three props I made. I could make more but I'll stick with the one I have now. Gotta focus on the rest of the gear plus finishing off more of my dragon suit. Running out of time as per my usual.
For those who are interested, here is how I did it. I took some defected floats that was used on a switch product at work from the scrap bin. Painted that green color after sliding a rubber o-ring around the middle. This gave it the look close to a soviet style grenade. To complete it, I need to come up with a way of making the "spoon", which is the long metal tab that goes down the side of the body.
At first i thought about bending those metal 2-post binding clips. But I thought about it some more and came up with the idea of using metal hair spring clips. Most of it was pre-bent. Just had drill out the dimple that held the two sections together and reshape one side a little to fit the contours of the body.
I then drilled the top extension to allow the pin to go through it and the spoon. I could have used cotter pins but made my own using small diameter paper clips as they were easier to bend and had longer legs. The extensions are made of steell so a bit of a pain to drill but I manage it by going nice and slow.
I attached the rings to the dent paper clips, thread it into the hinge and extension holes, and spread the legs out to hold it in place. Overall, it gives it the look i as after. Not a perfect look-a-like but quite convincing for most people. Since these are going to a futuristic costume, the difference from the real thing is explained away anyway, so there.
My next step to to hang them off the tactical vest I bought. Got a couple of ideas of that but that is still a work in progress. I could simply clip the spoons over the loops on the vest but I run the risk of them popping off if bumped. I am thinking of using some kind of straps to better hold them in place. Maybe some Velcro or something. I'll figure something out I'm sure.
