My first attempt at adding the heat shield around the barrel failed. I used this cardboard tube. The diameter was a little larger that I wanted but it was close at paw and I figured it was close enough. I made a paper template to scale and use that to center-punch the holes. Then I used a sharp blade to trace over the sides of the slots just deep enough to leave a nice line on the surface of the tube. That part actually worked well.
Even though the cardboard was quite thick and dense, I had reservations on how well I can drill and cut it. I should have wrapped tape around it as the drill hole frayed a bit. I was going to trim it with some scissors on the outside and use wood filler to smooth out the holes as well as the spiral indentation due to how it was made.
But that would end up being a lot of work so I abandon the tube and looked to start afresh. Plus I wouldn't be able to deal with the separation on the inner layers of the cardboard. I guess I could have painted on the slots but that wouldn't match the rest of the gun. So that was nixed.
I did find a section of plastic ABS pipe that was much better in size and wouldn't suffer from separating like the cardboard. Cutting it would be harder but at least I'll get a smoother finish. I am gong to post it next after finishing that part later tonight. It already looks so much better.
