Thanos shoulda been shirtless in that scene: Living alone, thinking no one would ever look for him or find him, it makes sense!
I figured the stones left an imprint in him, so his arm stays in a flux of destroyed & reviving. Neverending pain being an understatement. Hooking it like this keeps it out his way, (moving it makes that "understatement" an understatement.)
