Originally, the headfin was taller, and was part of the long dorsal fin, continuing on down the back of the neck and the spine. The dorsal fin was much taller too, looking more like a barracuda's fin than an iguana's back ridge. The neck fin stopped before the back of the neck instead of being a weird clown ruffle all the way around the head, and there were fins on all four limbs. The earfins were bigger and more finlike, too.
