Alright, I don't have pics of the painting, but here's what I did-
I covered the tail with Modge Podge. This did two things for me. First, it sealed up the normally porous craft foam to make it paintable. Second, by painting down on the scales and across on the belly, I gave it more texture.
Then, I painted it. And when I was painting it I realized I had no way to attach this, so I found a ripped shirt and cut the collar off of it. Glued it in there.
It's only one color. The next one I make there will be more attention paid to the color.
