Mort's really in a massive conundrum here. On the one hand, he's hungry and his prey - someone that tried to murder him in his sleep - is right there. And he hates humans.
On the other hand, he really, really wants that amulet bad. And he can't touch it without it whacking him on the nose with a rather nasty magic newspaper. But his prey can.

Well, he DOES have one - he got that amulet from somewhere, and it's not the type of artifact that one just picks up from a random street merchant. I'll wager that how he got it is a story in itself, and one that potentially is of very great interest to Mort. He certainly didn't steal it - any decent rogue would have seen Mort's sleeping-dragon gambit from a mile away and been much more circumspect with his murder attempt.
Noah's a useful idiot, and Mort well knows it. But to whom, exactly? That's the real question.

I like how Noah has the presence of mind to specify "in one piece." I'm not sure if Mort's the type to Monkey's Paw a deal or not, I'd lean towards "if he thought it was funny at the time then sure," but it's a good idea to be clear nonetheless.
On the other hand, saying "I only just found out magic was real" doesn't make a good preamble to your "let me try and fix this magic thing people are willing to kill over if I tell anyone else I have it" argument.
