"A bird and a fish may indeed fall in love, but where shall they live?"
Rhodes and Harumi sharing a few last moments before she returns to her underwater home. Inspired by a short story I am presently working on and hope to share soon. :)

A very good piece, makes me think about relationships between different social classes or across nations and how difficult they can be; something I know from personal experience.
Luthien did a great job capturing a bittersweet atmosphere with this piece. I just love how the beautiful colors and landscape contrast what is ultimately a melancholic scene.
I hope to see your short story soon.

There are a lot of those sorts of barriers, real and imagines, and no doubt they can make relationships problematic, but for the right person it's worth it, I think. ;)
I agree, she managed to convey so much with their faces, both their intimacy and longing for each other and the distance between their two worlds.
There's such beauty in this image and the artist always does such a wonderful job of it.
When I return from TFF I might rearrange my schedule and put up the first part early.

I think the previous comment sums it up pretty well. It is a very bittersweet image, and it captures the feel of a love that crosses some intangible but sometimes insurmountable barrier like class or nationality. Of course, in this case, the fact that Harumi lives under the water and Rhodes cannot provides a much more literal object between them than most, I think, but that does nothing to change the overall atmosphere of the piece. Luthien did a great job with this and I love the birds flying overhead in the above water section and the fish swimming by in the underwater section, each clearly evoking their element. The sunset behind them and the rather stylized waves around them are so pretty, too, and give the scene a very elegant look, I think. You can imagine it as a scene depicted on a scroll or a mural on the wall as easily as you can see them actually standing there. They do make a lovely couple, though, and I have a feeling that if anyone could find a way to make things work, even if just for part of the time, it's Rhodes. Possibly Harumi, too, but I'm nowhere near as familiar with her, yet.
Luthien was very excited when I told her the concept behind the image, and I couldn't have been happier with what she came up with. I think I had in my head just the idea of being able to see both above and below the water at the same time when I first presented the idea. Somehow Luthien managed to encapsulate their entire relationship in just this single image.
I know someone had commented on Luthien's post the waves are almost Japanese in influence and they just look so lovely all together.
I hadn't originally planned to stick Rhodes with anybody but when I had a mermaid girl I needed to find something to do with, Journeys seemed the most appropriate place, and given Diana and Ethan are sort of a thing, Rhodes was the next most eligible bachelor. Plus I sort of liked the idea of someone who is so different from her sort of falling for her without even noticing. ;)

Definitely what I was hoping for with this piece. While it was sort of something that just happened, I really liked the idea of these two characters getting together and having a relationship. ;) I definitely never thought I'd have a use for a mermaid, but that just goes to show you never know.
1. Such a sad story! I hope that Rhodes and Harumi can either make it work or find new loves.
2. Blatant self-promotion time! My RPG Crimestrikers includes a romance between bird man Jeff "Top" Ranking and humanoid fish woman Donacina. They share an apartment in Vantage Point, the team's skyscraper headquarters, which has a large pool/water tank so the amphibious Dona can take a swim when she feels like it; she also visits home fairly often. Love conquers all!... sometimes.
