The Ivenmoth Redcloak is purposely designed to be stiff and worn somewhat loose, for various reasons. Perhaps the biggest reason is because this allows its wearers to conceal their weapons and armor underneath.
Not every recruit is given a full set of protective plate or chainmail, especially since low-level recruits sometimes join up for a few days' worth of food and shelter before taking off in the night with whatever equipment they've been given.
It also allows the higher-ranked and otherwise important members to wear full sets of armor and still blend in with the rest, making it hard for would-be thieves or assassins to tell who's got the Good Stuff.
On the flipside, it means that any random drunkard or malcontent wanting to take out their frustrations on the local enforcers cannot be sure if their intended target is wearing something underneath that could stop a blade or blunt a club strike, or where the armored vs. exposed points might be.
This also gives the entire force an advantage, in that House Ivenmoth can spread out its equipment thinly, and still (mostly) force a would-be attacker to deal with an extra element of uncertainty, in that they cannot be certain exactly what they'll be getting into.
Redcloaks: a versatile solution for a budget-conscious guard force!

Oh come on! Do you know how much harder you're making the medic's job? Do you? YOU DO NOT.
And get yourself some light chainmail. Or padded silk. For heaven's sake, this backwater 'verse is still in nappies but I know you could at least dig up something in double-layer thin leather after this.

That depends on the armor. If he had been wearing a chain-mail shirt, there's a good chance brakka wouldn't have been able to completely get through the mail resulting in a shallow poky wound instead of a run-through. And then that encounter would have gone much differently with only medical attention being necessary is a bandage. As it is, he is going to need a bit of work to fix up and lots of rest and drugs.
so few things. Love this series to bits.
Its a good thing he didnt take it out as hes not bleeding more than he should be. He survived one stab wound before hell most likely survive again as he is in a city and a standing member in the guild. More debt to kass but living friend is worth it.
that looks like a trench club. which means he is PISSED.Get seven nation army playing soon because its about to go down..

Ok, didn't see it going that way. Probably means that only 2 or 3 minutes has passed since the shanking - exactly as much time as necessary to exchange all the words written since then. From the comic I would usually expect a more stretchy timescale so the cavalry has the time to arrive.
So far it seems that this particular problem of Kass is at the end: Da Boys all seems to be unarmed, except maybe Brakka, So there will be no Spear Circle. And if they all try to get in the close combat Elim may get a couple of fingers chewed off but in the end Elim will be standing and the Yings will be mincemeat (note that the previous victim of Yinglet wrath is depicted naked and unarmed, and while Recloak is not armor it will probably protect from the claws). The only question now is whether they will be able to capture Brakka (and whether Kass will immediately eat his eyes).
Now about the Redcloaks: they are awesome and they got me thinking. It seems that while "hard" technologies are indeed on the pre-Renaissance level some non-technological knowledge seems to be more advanced. Redcloaks is one such thing: concealed armor was always concealed as normal clothing as far as I know. To purposefully design concealing uniforms to obfuscate the strength of your guards instead of openly wearing weapons and armour for intimidation strikes me as very modern thing; such ideas are not obvious. The diagrams in Ran's study is another: even if he's the Val Salian Leonardo it's one thing to posit heliocentrism, another to chart elliptic orbits in different planes. All in all it lend some additional credence to the theory that humans are not from Planet Bugs-and-Yings.
Next: with all due respect, sir, if Elim gets to survive now in absence of Healthy Healthy Juice or yinglet-transforming nanomachines I am officially calling bullshit. I would be ok with Elim surviving before that page (survival rate for gut wounds before the antibiotics was disgustingly low but it was not zero), but additional strain of fighting pushes survival beyond belief. Though of course fighting with the gut wound is definitely believable.
What's also interesting is the fact that even if he survives in absence of another Zhing he would be invariably bed-bound for weeks to come. So either he stops being active participant in the plot even if he lives or we are looking for the big time-skip.
Oh, and I love your unsound effect in the fourth panel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzHuCDDzP-E Here, lemme post some appropriate tunes for this scene
So, when Brakka and his boys kidnapped Kass, they just ran around the corner? Huh. Ya know, for how competent Brakka is for a yinglet, he is still quite incompetent. He stabs Elim, but then leaves his weapon lodged in his abdomen and doesn't take it with him. Then, he proceeds to stick close to the crime scene after. Not only that, he barely recognized the consequences of his actions beforehand. Though, that last bit isn't entirely his fault as there were some repercussions that he could never have forseen.
On another note, I'm quite glad to see Elim stepping in. He is Kass's guard, after all. It's his job. To see him get stabbed and do nothing, it would seem almost as though… "Why is he even there?" I mean, the only reason he got stabbed is because Brakka caught him off-guar– ooooooh, wait a minute! So, yeah. Elim may have been injured, but, in a way, Elim owes it to Kass. Not necessarily as a friend repaying a debt, but a loyal guard who would give his life to save the one he swore to protect. Him showing up is him essentially saying, "I will die for you." He's not going to go to an aid station and get himself fixed up, knowing Kass might be in danger.
