Giannes I've enjoyed drawing this cute puppy a lot! To be sincere, I feel very very sorry for Scrappy Doo, who was used as a scapegoat when the Scooby Doo series was declining. I always have found this little, brave and reckless puppy totally adorable

The sheer level of misunderstanding is incredible.
The message from those who hates Scrappy (fairly or not) was that the character should be made better. A big problem was the repetitive plots that put him and other characters in an identical role week after week. There was a chance there to add some depth, a new angle and new take on the pup. What the producers gave us was 'You hate this character? Let's make him objectively terrible!'
I knew it was bad when we got the 'Mary Jane' joke. "What's that? People like to say Shaggy's a stoner? Hey! Let's drop massively obvious hints! Explaining the joke makes it funnier yes?"
Sigh.

I didn't even like the movie as an 8-year-old, and I'm shocked that the writer went on to direct the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. If the Scooby-Doo movies did help James Gunn with his career, then that's the only good thing that came from it. Raja Gosnell learned nothing, and his films keep getting worse.
It's very unfair (and even childish) how many producers, directors, creatives... have used Scrappy like a scapegoat of the decline of the series. It's not due to repetitive plots during decades, no... it was Scrappy's fault. Simply ridiculous.
And yeah, I find that NC a bit... idiot and pedantic.

Scooby-Doo was a very formulaic show from the beginning. Charming surely, but its dwindling popularity was what led to Scrappy's introduction. It did save the show, but Scrappy hasn't appeared since 1988. I'm guessing that no one wants to try and are scared of additional backlash, which is sad because I'd be okay with a positive reinterpretation of his character.
