As Rohn walked Aleu followed closely behind. It was a short stroll; all that separated the different ranges was a stone wall. The next range was far longer than the one they previously used. Rohn explained how this range is used for Medium Range combat, thus the main weapon of choice was the “Blackfish Carbine”. Like the famed Winchester it used a Lever Action to operate the gun. This is when Rohn explained how the Darkwatch had affected history from the shadows. It turns out that Mr. Winchester didn’t design the lever action system but actually reproduced it after discovering one of the Darkwatch’s Blackfish Carbines! The design was first used in what many are familiar with, the “Henry” Rifle, which was later redesigned in 1866 and was one of the first “Winchester” rifles, it was also known as the “Improved Henry”. But Lever Action rifle was completely based upon the Darkwatch’s Carbine. Mr. Winchester kept the discovery a secret. It was such an unusual gun he, at first, didn’t know what to make of it. And indeed the weapon was unusual. The barrel was just a couple of inches shy of three feet. The weapon’s stock also had a blade affixed to the bottom edge. Interestingly enough the hammer was in the shape of a cross! Like virtually all lever action carbines it used a tube magazine with a loading gate on the right side.
Rohn then led Aleu over to the Gun Rack and handed her one of the Carbines and a box of ammunition. The Wolf took the weapon and the ammo and loaded the gun. Aleu was more than familiar with Winchester Rifles so she knew how to load and fire the weapon.
“No Aleu, the recoil on this is gonna’ be far stronger than the Redeemer. It should feel like something along the lines of a both barrels of a 10 gauge shotgun going off at once! That should give you an idea of what it’ll feel like.” Rohn warned Aleu. The she-wolf then put the butt to her shoulder and levered the action to load a round into the chamber. Like almost every other gun it used .50 caliber ammunition. Aleu looked out down range and there were similar targets like the ones from before. This time they had painted red “targets” on the vital points of its anatomy. The Wolf again took careful aim and lined up a head shot. She squeezed the trigger and KA-POW! She thought that the Redeemer was loud but the Carbine was worse! Its blast echoed and bounced off of the sandstone walls. The recoil gave Aleu a good shake and Rohn was right about how it felt. Then she looked at her target and there wasn’t a head to be seen. She took aim again at a different manikin, this time lining up a chest shot. KA-POW!!! The gun called out again, she looked at her target and she put a hole the size of a man’s fist in it! She stood up from her sitting position with a smile.
“I like this gun!” Aleu said excitedly. Rohn chuckled to himself under his breath.
“Well now that you’re familiar with the Blackfish, why don’t we try train you on the Argus?” Rohn said.
“The what?” replied Aleu, Rohn then explained.
“The Argus Shotgun; developed back in 1876. It’s a four barreled 10 gauge weapon that uses a Pump Action.” Aleu paused for a moment.
“Four barrels!? 10 Gauge!!?!” Aleu said nearly in disbelief, but considering what she’s seen so far it she wouldn’t be surprised. “Ok, I’ve seen some hefty firepower; but a four barreled 10 gauge? That’s too much gun for any man!” shouted Aleu.
“Now hold on a sec, I didn’t say it fired all four at once. The barrels are arranged in a Quad format, two on the top and two on the bottom. Now when the gun is fired only the top two barrels unload. When you pump the action the barrels flip. So the two that were on top are now the ones on the bottom and vice versa. Also your used shells are ejected automatically and two fresh rounds are loaded. Now I’ll admit, even though the barrels are 10 gauge they’ll feel like a 5 gauge when fired! But the gun’s weight should help lessen the recoil.” Finished Rohn; Aleu was still in a bit of awe.
“My God, what the hell else are you guys working on? Tesla’s Death Ray perhaps?” Aleu retorted sarcastically. Rohn then took on an awkward pose like someone caught red handed. “You can’t be serious! YOU ARE!!?!”
“Well… Yes and No. Tesla is an amateur and is WAY too far ahead of his time. He’s got the right ideas and theories but lacks the time, materials, and equipment to develop his work. But we have no affiliation with him. So that’s no, the yes part is we are working on a “Death Ray” but its still in early stages of R&D. The plans were approved last week. But currently we’re researching and developing full automatic weapons. Right now we’re testing what some call a Machine Gun that can fire 10 pounds of hot lead per magazine down range.” Said Rohn, again Aleu’s jaw was practically on the floor in shock and surprise.
“Ok, just hand me the damn Shotgun.” Aleu ordered, not wanting the conversation to go further. But in her mind she wondered that with the destructive power of there weapons are the Darkwatch really trying to be more affective or do they enjoy obliterating and maiming their enemies?
A number of hours went by as Rohn trained Aleu in the use of their weapons. All of which were old generations, most of them dated back to the late 1870’s. But they were reliable and highly effective. For Aleu the Redeemer was a little much for her but she did take a fancy to the Carbine. Her opinion of the Argus though was positive, it was a heavy weapon and it was perfect for close range combat. And can be loaded with slugs instead of shot if needed. Then Rohn showed her another weapon development from 1876, the Quicksilver Rail rocket! The prototype was based on a Naval Signal Cannon, but instead of firing cannon balls it fired self propelled projectiles with an explosive charge that was vastly more destructive. Aleu wanted no part of it for fear of the thing exploding while on her shoulder and by its great weight. This was understandable, Rohn only trained Aleu to use it incase of emergencies. Almost the only Regulators who used the weapon were the Demomen. Then they reached a special training range, they had to take a special Lift to get to the firing position. It was a large balcony that overlooked a vast range. It was like a miniature canyon with small adobe structures in places on the bottom and the artificial canyon walls. Animated targets were placed randomly about and were hidden in most places.
“You expect me to shoot from up here? I don’t think any of the weapons you’ve trained me with could hit anything here!” said Aleu. Rohn led her to another Gun Rack, but this one was different. It was tall, REALLY TALL!
“Well, there’s one weapon I have yet to train you with.”
“Ok and what’s that?” Aleu asked.
“The Carson Range Rifle, designed to maximize range at the expense of everything else! And it’s also my personal weapon of choice.” Rohn replied smiling. He then proceeded to take one of the guns, it was truly a formidable weapon but it was more than cumbersome. The barrel alone of this rifle was at LEAST 8 feet long! The last foot and a half looked like some kind of silencer but it wasn’t, it was a counter weight!!?! Like the Blackfish it had a blade fixed to the under edge of the stock and used a lever action system. But unlike the carbine it didn’t use a tube magazine, it was a Revolving Rifle! Rohn began to load the gun, first he pulled out two boxes. The first was filed with huge revolver cylinders, the second with ammunition. Each cylinder only had 4 chambers, HUGE ones at that! Rohn loaded 6 cylinders and placed them on the firing table. To load the rifle he slid the sniping scope forward, inserted one of the cylinders and then pulled the scope back into its position, locking both the scope and cylinder in place. Rohn levered the action once to make sure everything was lined up correctly.
“I’ve heard of extreme weapons but this is ridiculous!” said Aleu. Rohn just smiled amused.
“Before I joined the Darkwatch I was the best marksman in our entire county and I always strived to be the best at target shooting. Even when hunting I’ve always kept a good amount of distance between me and the target; I’ve only gotten better since then. But since I joined many units have relied on my keen aim to take care of major threats like Oozers, Banshees, or Hellions. The Carson Range Rifle only has four rounds per magazine/cylinder so you have to make you shots count. Most can only carry up to 16 rounds of ammunition total. But since I specialize in Sharpshooting I can carry a lot more. The gun fires a .69 caliber round with a specially engraved cross on the tip. When the bullet hits a target it helps to allow the bullet to open up like flower and rip out chunks of enemy flesh and bone, but wont when passing through solid objects like walls. These rounds are highly lethal and devastating. When firing the Carson you might want to invest on some ear protection.” Rohn then lined up a shot and pulled the rigger. KAAAAA-POOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!! Aleu quickly covered her ears with her hands! The guns blast was absolutely defining! She even saw the dust on the floor and table bounce from the shockwave! Rohn motioned her to come over and reluctantly she did. He gave her a pair of binoculars and pointed at the small adobe hut in the distance. One of the walls had a hole twice the size of her head and the wooden target inside was nothing more than splinters! The manikin was completely destroyed aside from the lower portions of the legs. As if the destructive power weren’t enough but the sheer distance also called for awe, 3,500 yards! Aleu didn’t know whether to be amazed or horrified!
“Holy $#!&%” she muttered to herself.
“And to give you some perspective, that was a close range shot.” Rohn told Aleu. She turned her head slowly towards him slack jawed.
“Are you @#$%&$# serious!!?! How far can that thing shoot!?” she asked.
“Well, I’ve hit a target just shy of two miles before; though I could probably shoot further. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if someone could shoot clear across the Yellow Stone valley!” Said Rohn. Aleu was still in a state of shock, what else could these men create. And with such advance weaponry why don’t they just take over the world! They could do it so easily with there numbers. Massively destructive weapons, millions of members or more. And they all live in total and utter secrecy! Aleu couldn’t understand these guys at all.
“So, do you want to take a shot?” asked Rohn and Aleu replied:
“I’d rather not.”
