Nose art, PBY-5 Catalina
RebelSqurl came forth to commission me for some more nose art to help me get the current car nightmare and gas to Estrella wars in 2 weeks.Wanting a PBY Catalina featured this time, I put forth a PBY-5 as the model. I initially was going to do a straight forward profile. But the Catalina's high wing would have looked weird.
Technically the national insignia would be were the nose art is currently, so I fudged it.
Gotta love the Dumbo, my dad flew one in WW2 off Panama on patrols (When he wasn't flying the only B-15 in existence as a transport from Brownsville Texas to Panama and back or a P-40 on patrols)
His huge claim to fame in his only combat action was when somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico a U-Boat sunk a oiler and everybody was looking for it. Spotting a familiar shape under water, dad dove down and dropped his 4 depth charges, straddling the target perfectly. Debris came to the surface and he landed on the water, taxi'd up so they could see if they could see what sub they sunk. The waist gunner said they got the evidence and they returned to Panama.
Upon return the gunner showed him a big hunk of whale blubber. He sunk a whale! His crew would paint a whale on the nose of the aircraft with a swastika on it as a kill marking!
That and he and his crew spotted the periscope of a Japanese I-400 Sub off the western approach to Panama literally a couple days before the end of the war. Turned out later on that sub and another were on their way to attack the locks with 4 Aichi M6A Sieran seaplanes. And never did.
BTW,
Heywulf You can copy this for Spontoon Island.

No, He briefly spotted the scope (Said that when you spot a scope in an area where no US subs were operating, safe bet, it was a Jap boat! Cause South American wasn't operating any subs!) and by the time they circled around and out a cloud bank, he said they lost track of it. But both he and the Copilot and a waist gunner confirmed the sighting of the periscope.
The war was over 2 days later!

Interesting that your dad flew out of Brownsville, that's close to where I live, in fact. Funny story, Rabbi, I'm glad your father got a good tale to tell out of his wartime duty!
Thanks for the pic, it looks great! Looking forward to getting it in the mail soon. :)
