Jesus I had SO much fun doing this commission. This is puppysona as one of the Puerto Rican soldiers fighting in the Spanish American war. it was HARD AS FUCK to find references for the uniforms and history for this, but I think it came out great. Heres a link to my main references for this piece: http://www.agmohio.com/LR1898uniforms.htm … I hope I didn't fuck the timeline of any of this up. I absolutely LOVE the rayadillo fabric uniforms though that gave them the distinctive striped look. Apparently, it was super useful for the tropics.

Span Am war...my favorite forgotten war.
That war literally destroyed a world power and showed the Europeans that the US was now a valid country. So much was learned from that war by the US (Switching to smokeless powder, Malaria cures, Adopting the Mauser action (The Krag action, though smoother, was weaker). US Navy proved itself in so many ways. From the USS Oregon sailing from Seattle to Cuba in 66 days (Unheard of in those days, 14,000 miles! That alone sparked Roosevelt to dig the Panama canal 5 years later) The shattering of the Spanish fleets in Cuba and Manila. Even the British took note!
That war also reunited the US, cause post Civil war reconstruction was not exactly going well and the events in Cuba gave the North and South a common foe to team up against. Teddy Roosevelt also shocked the hard liners in the war department by accepting anybody into the Rough Riders, Rich or poor, regardless of race, creed. If you could shoot, ride and willing to fight, you were in. Roosevelt's acceptance of Black troopers into what was to be a white unit seriously pissed off the segregationists. Woodrow Wilson would later re-segregate the military in 1916, something that wouldn't be cleared up til Truman in 47.
