Basara Q5 and Mandra M3 were the mechanical beast duo that saw action and fought against each other for their respective Masters on episode 47 of the original Mazinger Z anime.
Mandra resemble a giant sea serpent Mechanical Beast, with propulsion rockers on its side. It was purple and yellow, with pink eyes. It was capable to constrict and crush its opponents, like a snake constrict its prey. It could fire missiles from its mount, release an electrical discharge, and had two laser cannons strap on its cheeks. Its upper body could separate from the lower half and these two halves could operate individually. Mandra M3 was part Baron Ashura's Iron Mask Legion.
As for Basara, its was an skinny anthropomorphic bird, Light and Dark Green, with a long orange beak, and pink and bronze yellow arms and legs, with arms and legs, its talons with sharp claws for hands and feet. It had as well yellow saw like fins on its shoulders, which had rocks strap to them, which allow him to fly, these rockets as well serve as rocket launchers, as well, Basara could fire needle like missile from its mouth which release an electrical discharge. Basara Q5 Belong to Count Brocken's Iron Cross Legion.
The Episode starts with Count Brocken and Baron Ashura dueling in a sword fight when Dr. Hell shows up and stops them, reprimanding them for their behavior, forcing them to cooperate for the upcoming operation. Afterwards, Ashura takes the Bood, with Mandra M3, and on its way to Japan, Ashura stumbles upon a ship and releases Mandra, who wraps around it and crushes it. Koji, who was training with the Boss gang, is inform by Prof. Mori Mori and he and Mazinger are dispatch. When he arrives, Mandra submerges with Z in tow. Ashura reports to Hell, who informs him/her to maintain Z occupy while Count Brocken, on the Gool, attack the Power lab with Basara Q5, much to the Baron's dismay. As Mandra continues to fight Z underwater, Basara Q5 is launched and attacks the photon power lab with its missiles, Aphrodite goes into action, but Basara grabs her rockets and throws them back at her, tho she takes cover and the lab activates the energy barrier, leaving Basara locked outside and Yumi calls Koji, but before he could return, the lower half of Mandra grabs on to him, impeding Z's escape out of the water. Mandra upper body bites Z's arm and releases an electrical discharge onto Z.
As Basara breaks through the barrier, Brocken boast of his victory to Ashura, who, out of pride, chooses to go against Hell's orders and Mandra releases Z, who's cockpit is damage and flooding. The Monster puts itself back together and leaves for the lab. Koji wakes up, Pilder filling up with sea water, tries to activate Mazinger with no avail. Mandra arrives on the Power Lab and attacks Basara. As the monsters fight an angry Brocken demands answers to which Ashura response he/she would not be unable to live with he/herself if he/she were to allow Brocken to take the victory, the Lab staff lies baffled at the display, with an even displeased Dr. Hell calling their behavior out, though Brocken and Ashura ignore him out ego.
Koji succeeds in bringing Z back online and escapes the ocean, Hell takes notice of this and orders his lieutenants to retrieve their monsters, having been damage in their battle with each other and they escape before facing Z. Koji falls unconscious and reawaken in the medical area. As Yumi orders the Three Scientists to begin repairs on Z, Boss intervenes asking the Professor to built him a robot, something Yumi promises to think it over. Meanwhile, Hell severely reprimands Ashura and Brocken and orders them to repair the mechanical beasts.
As soon the work is done, both monsters are unleashed on the lab, Koji leaves the bed, against Yumi's orders and goes on Z to fight the monsters, however, as soon they proceed to attack the two monsters fight each other again, though this happens to be a trap, and Mandra wraps Z, while Basara bashes it. Koji is taken out, and barrier is activated, but this falls as well. Aphrodite tries to stop them, but she proves to be ineffective too. Koji wakes up and tackles Mandra, while he grabs Basara, bashing onto the ground. Mandra tries to take Z out, but Koji reacts, and tosses onto the ground.
The two monsters surround Z, in a repeat of Koji's training with the Boss Gang. The monsters fire their missiles, and Mazinger jumps out of their way, the monsters getting hit by the other's projectiles and severely getting damage. Koji dispatches them together with the Breast of Fire. Brocken and Ashura fight, blaming each other for the debacle, with Dr. Hell looking to their fight from the dinning table, glass of whine in hand, expressing his personal misfortune, depending of their help. (No kidding, episode is sort of weak, but Hell expressing his bad luck having Ashura and Brocken around so calmly, with food and whine on the table, is just too funny).
The Episode end with Boss promising to built a Robot by himself to Koji and Sayaka(OOOH! FORE-SHADOWING:D)
