In the legends of Somalia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Sudan, Morocco and the former Bornu Empire, some people turnt themselves into hyenas/hyena-men at night, or some hyenas into humans at day. Under the shape of hyenas, they terrorized people, notably lovers, and stole in graves from which they devoured corpses. They said there must have been one or 2 villages entirely inhabited with werehyenas and that among men werehyenas were blacksmiths, wizards and (sad to see they are discriminized everywhere) Jews. But one could recognize them under their human form thanks to their hairy bodies, their nasal voices and their red eyes gleaming in the dark.
