In Egyptian Mythology, when you die, you go through a series of stages before joining the Other Side. The last stage is the most crucial one : Anubis weighs the dead's heart and the Feather of Justice on a weighing scale. If the heart weighs as much or less, the dead had been someone correct or good, and he can access eternal rest. But if the heart is heavier, the dead had lived a life of vices. So they throw his heart to the demoness Ammit, with a crocodile head, with a hippopotamus lower body and with a lion upper body and mane (in some versions the mane is of a lion but the upper body of a spotted hyena). She devours the heart and the dead's soul disappear forever in atrocious sufferings.
