More plein air painting in acrylic from January 2015. This was the second one in which I really focused on deconstructing water and how to render it. In the greenbelt creek especially, there is a beautiful variety of hues that appears in relation to the depth of the water, thanks to the high concentration of limestone.
This piece was about two hours of work-- You can see a ref photo here, though the shadows moved quite a bit during that time.
You can see some warping in the scan from the paper not being completely flat- I think I was using cheap mixed media or acrylic paper which turned out a little wavy. I could have been doing these on panels, but the disposable nature of using a cheaper surface kept me from being too precious about each study, so I was able to work bravely without fear of screwing up a painting that was worth anything. I use the same approach with life drawing studies to avoid paralysis or stiffness.
