The sound of light footfalls could be heard echoing down the long stone corridor. A female figure moved through the castle at a quick pace. Her brown ponytail waved in the air behind her head as her maid uniform skirt flowed back and forth around her legs with her motions. She approached the large door of the lord of the castle’s bedchamber and regarded the two guards posted outside the doors. They were slouched and looking tired from their all night guard duty; a notion that didn’t sit well with the female lynx at all. “Look alive boys.” she said as she approached.
“Good morning Head Maid. All is well at this post.” said the first guard; a bull, after straightening his stance along with his partner.
“Good. Let’s make sure it stays that way. No sleeping at your post. I don’t want to have to inform Captain Adam.” said Alice a little sternly toward the second guard next, a tiger.
“No Head Maid. We wouldn’t let anything happen. There’s no reason to involve the Captain.” he replied.
“I hope not. Please grant me passage.” she said next. The guards obediently stepped aside and opened the door for her to enter. As she stepped forward though the bull put a hand on her shoulder lightly to stop her.
“Be wary. He hasn’t slept at all, and we’ve heard him pacing and muttering to himself all night since he returned. On top of that he broke something a while ago, and not on accident. We didn’t dare disturb him, but something happened that really upset him.” he whispered to her before stepping back.
“Sounds like Master is on edge about the mission.” thought the female to herself as she nodded to the bull in both acknowledgement and thanks before entering.
The doors creaked open as the maid stepped forward a little warily. “Don’t you think you’re being a little harsh on them Alice? It is early in the morning and near the end of their shift after all.” came the familiar voice of Sly from her left as the doors were closed behind her. Alice looked and found the wolfox picking up the ceramic shards of a broken teapot near the wall next to his bed Soft clinks could be heard as each piece was moved.
“I can’t help it Master. It regards your safety. And speaking of safety, why didn’t you call me or one of the other maids to clean that up for you? Here; please allow me.” she offered quickly.
“No; thank you Alice, but I am perfectly capable of cleaning up a little mess.” he said as he continued, placing the sharp ceramic shards carefully on the tray that once held the completed teapot. The lynx watched the wolfox work and silently thanked him for declining her offer. Admittedly she was restless. She was worried about the mission, and was likely to make a mistake and cut herself on accident.
“How can you be so calm Master?” she asked as she watched him.
“Worried about the mission?” he asked simply as he continued.
“How could I not be? After hearing the briefing you gave last night I understand just how risky this heist is. How can you not be a nervous wreck?” she asked.
“Because I have faith in them. And because the heist is already over.” he said matter of factly.
“It is? How do you know Master?” she asked curiously.
“Because I can feel how far away they are through the runes of tracking I placed on them. They’re on their way back, and should be here before long. I want you to meet them at the front door and escort them to the meeting room.” he instructed.
“Yes Master.” replied Alice quickly. She was relieved to know that both Maneki and Luck were safe and would be back soon. The lynx maid picked up the tray holding the shards of the broken teapot and turned to make her exit. Sly watched her leave and then turned his attention to the large window.
“I’m holding out hope the heist went as planned, but with what I felt a little while ago I’m not so sure.” he thought, looking at the large tea stain on the wall.

The come and go of castle workers had just gotten into full swing when Maneki and Luck reached the front entrance. They made their way toward the stables and dismounted their horses quickly. Handlers took the reigns of the animals and led them off to rest as a female figure approached the pair of thieves. “Welcome home.” came the familiar voice of Alice behind them. Maneki and Luck turned, but gasped surprised as Alice pulled them both suddenly into a group hug. “I’m so glad you both are safe.” she said relieved as she released them quickly.
“Y-Yes.” replied Maneki sheepishly. Luck said nothing in reply to the notion. She wasn’t particularly happy about being back here, but they had made it back in their allotted time; if only barely.
“Come. Master is waiting for you both in the meeting room.” said Alice happily. Maneki and Luck nodded to the lynx as she turned to lead them into the castle.
******
The meeting room was a place that neither Maneki nor Luck had been before. It was adjacent to the dining hall and served as a rendezvous room for when Sly entertained important guests. A long table sat in the middle and looked to be able to seat quite a few people. Across from where the three females entered the room sat the wolfox. He had a serious expression on his face; one that neither feline thief expected him to wear upon seeing him again. “Welcome back my pets.” he said as the door closed behind them.
“Thank you…Master.” replied both Maneki and Luck together.
“Alright then; give your reports. How went your mission?” he asked next simply. It seemed there would be no joking; none of his usual distractions or perversion. The mission was the most important thing on the agenda.
“Master. I would like to report that my mission was a success. I delivered the package to Amber’s room on the pedestal next to her bed and placed the gem on her collar just as you instructed.” reported Maneki quickly
“Very good Kitty. And you Kitten?” asked Sly looking first from Maneki to Luck. As much as Luck would have loved to mess with him, she knew it was not a good idea. This demeanor he was exhibiting here was more attuned to what she’d seen just before they left for the heist; serious. He was not in the mood for games.
“My mission was a success as well. I found the gem just where you said it would be.” she reported as she reached into her satchel and retrieved the Tiger’s Eye Amber in question. She approached him slowly and offered it to him to inspect. As he took the gem in hand the sound of a dull thud echoed through the room.
Everyone turned to see Maneki lying motionless; collapsed face up on the floor. “’Neki!” exclaimed Luck as she rushed over to her friend. The doors flew open as a couple of guards rushed in after hearing the shout.
“You lot take her to the infirmary. Now!” instructed Alice quickly.
“Yes Ma’am” replied the guards as they carefully picked the calico feline up and carried her off. Luck moved to follow them before a familiar voice stopped her.
“Kitten. I have not dismissed you. We will continue the debriefing.” said Sly seriously.
“But…” she started as she grit her teeth softly. She really wanted to follow them.
“Don’t worry about Maneki. She’ll be fine. She could no longer stand the shock and the strain of what she put her body through and needs to rest.” assured Sly.
“Strain? What strain? Her mission was simpler than mine.” replied Luck quickly.
“Apparently not. I was going to ask her about it after I got your report, but whether she meant to keep it a secret, or she was waiting until after the briefing was over to mention it, she omitted one important piece of information in her recounting of her mission. At one point she almost died last night.” explained Sly to the surprise of both Luck and Alice.
“Died? How do you know?” asked Luck quickly unbelieving.
“The Rune of Empathy. Remember I am linked to your and her feelings and emotions. And she was in a state of panic I haven’t felt from anyone who wasn’t near death before.” said Sly gravely.
“But what happened?” asked the cream furred feline hearing this.
“That information is only known by Maneki right now, though I still plan to question her about it later.” he replied.
“But she looked fine when she got back.” noted Alice.
“You put a healing rune on our collars without telling us didn’t you? That’s why she survived.” asked Luck realizing.
“Yes. I did.” answered Sly simply.
“I thought so. It was something I haven’t felt in a long time.” said Luck thoughtfully.
“I felt your emotions too Kitten. You were almost in a state of uncontrolled rage at one point.” said Sly toward her next.
“If it hadn’t been for the healing rune I wouldn’t have been able to control it.” she said seriously.
“You knew about it then? I thought your ability to sense runes didn’t allow you to distinguish between them.” said Sly.
“I can’t. But I know when a healing rune is at work. My…my mother was a rune master, and when I was little she used to place healing runes on my clothes before I would go out to play. She would tell me not to play in certain places because they were dangerous. Of course I ignored her warnings, and of course I would get hurt. The first time I was told not to climb a tall tree that was near the house. I did anyway, and I fell from it and hurt my leg. While I lay there crying; before my eyes my mother appeared. She comforted me with words and made the pain go away. But she also scolded me for disobeying her. When I went home that night I got scolded a second time because my mother noticed that the healing rune she’d put on my clothes was gone. Turns out the mother I had seen while being healed was a version of her my mind made up based on how I knew her to be and how I knew she would react. That’s why I knew that there was a healing rune at work at Bartholomew’s Castle; because I saw you. Not only would you not have been there; you also knew something personal about me that I’ve never shared with anyone other than the leader of the Thieves Guild and Maneki; that my dagger was my fathers. It was made for him by my mother.” explained Luck.
“So that’s how you know so much about runes and how they work. Interesting. In any case I am very glad that I took the precaution of putting the runes on you both.” said Sly seriously.
“I am too.” said Luck truthfully as she turned to face the door. Maneki was obviously on her mind now.
“Um Master; now that we know that the mission was a success; would that conclude the meeting?” asked Alice seeing this.
“Yes. I’ve confirmed that this is the gem. And you replaced this one with the one I gave you?” asked Sly toward Luck.
“Yes. It’s sitting on the pedestal in the alcove hidden behind Bartholomew’s portrait in his bedchamber.” confirmed Luck.
“Good. You have my thanks Kitten. You are dismissed. You may take the day and relax. You’ve earned the rest. But before you do anything else you are to remove the clothes I provided for the heist and leave them on the nightstand in the guest room you slept in before. Alice will collect them later.” he instructed.
Luck’s eyes grew quickly in alarm at his words. “But…”
“Don’t worry. The clothes I gave you before yesterday’s briefing are waiting for you in the room. You have not lost the privilege of clothing. I would suggest you get some rest in the guestroom, but I know you’ll be heading to the infirmary after you change.” said Sly knowingly.
A small smile crossed Luck’s face. Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all. “Yes Master.” said the feline in answer as she nodded to him before turning to leave.
Sly watched the door close and turned to Alice now. “Alice. I want you to keep this safe. Keep it on your person and stay near the front of the castle.” he said as he handed the orange gemstone over to her.
“Yes Master. Though I was hoping to visit the infirmary myself.” said Alice truthfully.
“That’s fine. Just make it a short visit. I want you to stay in the front areas of the castle.” he reiterated.
“Yes Master. Thank you.” said the lynx as she took her leave.
“If all went as planned we’ll be having another guest soon.” he thought to himself as she left.
*****
Dim blue runes glowed and faded repeatedly on the thin blanket draped over the calico feline’s body. Maneki lay in one of the infirmary’s small beds sleeping soundly. There was a peaceful expression on her face. It had been a couple of hours since she fainted. Luck sat in a chair next to the bed with her own eyes closed, and her arms and legs crossed. She tapped her right index finger on her left arm worriedly as she waited for any sign that her friend and partner was okay. Whatever physical wound Maneki had received had been fully healed by the healing rune that Sly had placed on her, but it seemed that the shock of it all had caught up to her.
Luck had been assured by the doctor that Maneki was fine, but she couldn’t relax. Not until she confirmed it for herself. The sound of liquid dripping into a potion vial on a nearby alchemical table distillery caught her attention as she opened her eyes. “He’s got a fully stocked infirmary here.” she noted to herself as she looked around the room. Healing runes were the main source of aid; which made sense since he is a rune master. But there were also potions, anti-toxins, ordinary medical devices and bandage cloth as well. The infirmary was devoid of patients other than Maneki at the moment and the sudden sound of low groaning stood out against the repeated dripping sound and caught Luck’s attention now.
Maneki’s eyelids closed a little tighter before opening slightly as she regained consciousness slowly. Her yellow eyes opened unfocused for a moment as she shifted slightly on the bed. Luck watched eagerly as her friend woke up. “Wh-Where am I?” thought the calico feline to herself as her vision began to clear a moment later. She recognized her surroundings to be a hospital of sorts, but it was unfamiliar to her. “’Neki?” came a female voice to her right. One she recognized instantly.
“Lucky?” she asked as she turned to see her best friend and partner sitting next to the bed. The look on Luck’s friend’s face was one of sheer relief.
“Are you okay?” she asked hesitantly.
“I’m fine Lucky.” replied Maneki as she sighed in relief herself. The next action wasn’t expected by either feline as a hard slap crossed Maneki’s face suddenly. Luck held a look of shock on her face as she looked at the red mark on her friend’s face then at her hand in the after stance of the slap. “What was that for Lucky?” asked Maneki quickly as she turned back with a tear in her eye.
“I…I don’t know. I was so relieved; then I was just…so angry. Why didn’t you tell me you almost died last night?” asked Luck seriously.
“I…How did you know about that?” asked Maneki confused as she cupped her hand over her cheek.
“Sly told me after you fainted during the debriefing.” replied Luck quickly.
“Right. He would know. I never meant to hide it from you. I just didn’t want you to worry.” said Maneki truthfully as she closed her eyes solemnly. Another movement caught the calico off guard again and she opened her eyes quickly with a soft gasp as she felt her friend’s arms wrap around her in a tight hug.
“I already thought I lost you once when you didn’t return after you first came in here. I don’t want that feeling ever again.” whispered Luck as she thought back on the panic she felt when she realized that Maneki hadn’t returned from trying to steal the Twilight Diamond that was in Sly’s possession.
Maneki returned the hug and squeezed her friend tightly in turn. “I’m sorry Lucky. I never meant to make you worry.” she said seriously. The two stay embracing each other a moment before they reluctantly let go and sit back.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” asked Luck seriously.
“Yes Lucky. I’m fine now. Don’t worry.” replied the calico before a knock catches both of their attentions at the door. Both felines look up to see Alice at the door peeking in.
“Glad to see you’re awake. How do you feel Maneki?” asked the lynx female curiously.
“I’m feeling better Alice. Thank you for asking. How long was I out for?” asked Maneki.
“Two hours. Alice has been coming to check on you periodically.” replied Luck.
“Only because Master ordered me to stay close to the front of the castle. If he hadn’t I would’ve been right here with Luck. She hasn’t left your bedside.” said Alice.
“You’ve been very nice to us since you met us; like you’re actually invested in our lives. Not to sound ungrateful, but why are you so interested in us?” asked Luck quickly hearing this.
“Because you’re Master Sly’s Pets. You are more important to him than you know. And you helped him to bring to fruition an endeavor he’s been planning and obsessing over for years. I am very grateful to you both for doing that and I want you both to be comfortable.” explained Alice truthfully. Maneki and Luck couldn’t help but smile at her explanation. It was a weird, but nice change to be around people actually interested in their health and lives. A loud yawn from Luck alerted Alice to a certain truth that she’d forgotten. “You should really take Master’s advice and get some rest Luck. Maneki’s had a couple hours sleep since you’ve been back, but you haven’t slept a wink all night.” said the lynx maid concerned.
“I know. And now that I know that ‘Neki is okay I think I can be comfortable taking that advice.” said the cream furred feline as she stretched her arms tiredly.
“Do you need me to show you where the room is?” offered Alice.
“No thanks. I remember. I got directions from the guards when I went to change clothes.” said Luck as she put her hand on Maneki’s head. “I’m glad you’re alright ‘Neki. But please don’t do anything like that again.” she said to her friend.
“I promise I won’t Lucky. Sorry again.” said Maneki sheepishly.
Alice watched Luck leave and turned to Maneki now. “What about you? Do you want to just rest as well?” asked the lynx curiously.
“Actually I’m not sleepy. That must’ve been a deep sleep. I know I’m not fully rested, but I’m not ready to go back to sleep yet. Do you think Master would mind if I wandered around a while?” asked Maneki.
“I don’t think he will mind at all. He told Luck to relax for the day, and didn’t restrict her movement privileges. I doubt he would exclude you from that reward.” explained Alice. Maneki smiled at the notion and stretched herself before standing up. Her clothes had been changed by the doctor upon arrival to the infirmary, and she was dressed similarly to how she was yesterday in a simple shirt and pants. “Mind if I join you?” asked Alice curiously to the surprise of the calico female. “Master ordered me to stay near the front of the castle so I’m heading back that way now. I would like to walk with you if you don’t mind.” explained the lynx. Maneki smiled at the notion.
“Sure.” she replied.
*****
Twin footsteps echoed down the hall before and behind the two felines as they made their way toward the front of the castle. There was a calm air about the place now that Maneki found a little odd. Just a couple days ago she’d seen this entire castle as something to fear. As if it and everyone in it was out to get her. Now she looked at the patrolling guards and maids going about their duties and noticed a simple calmness to it all. This was nothing like Bartholomew’s Castle where everything had a rushed and almost idly hostile tension. “How long have you been here Alice?” asked the calico female curiously.
“I’ve been in service to Master Sly for seven years now. My mother was a slave and I was separated from her a few years after I was born and sold off myself. I’ve had five Masters in total including Master Sly.” explained Alice simply.
“And you said that he is the nicest one you’ve had?” asked Maneki next.
“Ah-ha. So you were awake yesterday morning then.” said Alice with a smile and a sideways glance.
“Yeah. I was.” replied Maneki with a slight blush.
“Well I do apologize for disturbing your sleep. But I didn’t lie. He really is the kindest and most caring Master I’ve ever had. That’s why I strive to make sure he’s as happy and comfortable as possible; to repay the kindness that he’s granted me these seven years.” explained Alice next.
Maneki stared at the lynx. She’d begun to see Sly as more than just the domineering presence that she’d pictured him to be when she was captured. She couldn’t deny that he had treated her with more respect than the majority of people she’s come across in her life even though she was a thief. She knew that he needed her and Luck for the heist, but it left a couple of questions in her mind now that it was over. What’s next? And how will he treat them going forward now that what he wanted them for is past? She would have to wait and find out. The large front castle doors were opening ahead of them by the guards as they quickly ushered a very familiar figure into the castle foyer. Maneki gasped at the sight of the arctic vixen as she stepped into the room in awe.
“Amber?” asked the calico confused as she ran quickly to her side.
“Maneki? Maneki!” said the white collared vixen as she threw her arms around Maneki’s neck happily.
Awkwardly the calico feline hugged the vulpine female back. “So you are the famous Amber. I’ve heard a lot about you, but I’ve never had the chance to meet you myself until today. Welcome to Master Sly’s castle.” said Alice politely as she caught up. Amber sighed as she heard this sentence. It was almost too good to be true.
“It’s good to see you Amber. But I don’t understand. How are you here?” asked Maneki confused.
“I’m here because of you actually.” said Amber in reply to Maneki’s confusion. “You placed this on my collar last night didn’t you?” asked the vixen pointing to the crystal attached to the collar running around her neck.
“Yes. But what does that…”
“…This is a magi-void crystal. It has the ability to disrupt the magic of runes set on whatever it is; like the rune on my collar.” started Amber happily. “And that’s not all. The package you left in the room had everything I needed to escape. And it was signed by Master Sly. I’ve never ever been so excited upon waking up before.” said Amber.
“What was in the package?” asked Maneki curiously.
“Instructions. I was to write a letter to Bartholomew informing him that I would be taking the deal to leave his service. Inside the package was a slightly burned replica of my collar and a pouch full of ashes. I was to meet Master Sly’s coach driver on the southern outskirts of Bartholomew’s Castle and scatter the ashes on the spot where he’d have scorched the ground in preparation for my arrival and leave the collar there. The crystal has a time limit of twelve hours and he was to get me here in that time.” explained Amber.
“But Maneki’s mission took place last night. The coach should have been too slow to get you here in time.” said Alice hearing this.
“He wasn’t driving a coach. He was on horseback. A really fast horse. It was exhilarating holding onto his back while he sped me away from that place.” said Amber beaming with a smile.
“I only wish I could have gone myself to take you away from there.” came a male voice behind everyone now. Maneki, Amber, and Alice turned to see Sly coming down the stairs. “Welcome back to my castle Amber. It’s good to see you again.” said the wolfox.
“Master Sly!” exclaimed Amber moving up to the male quickly and throwing her arms around him quickly. “I always knew you would keep your word and get me away from there.” she said happily as he hugged her back.
“Of course. I’m only sorry it took me so long.” he replied.
“No. Don’t be sorry. I won’t allow that from the male that saved my life. Thank you.” she said as a tear ran down her cheek. Maneki and Alice couldn’t help but smile at the notion. They were happy for Amber.
A glow caught everyone’s attention as they all turned their gaze to the crystal attached to Amber’s collar. It glowed and dimmed at a slowly increasing interval before bursting, surprising everyone suddenly. Maneki watched this in horror. Her pupils shrank as she realized what had just happened. “This is a magi-void crystal. It has the ability to disrupt the magic of runes set on whatever it is; like the rune on my collar.” repeated Amber’s voice in her head. Maneki’s breath grew quick and short as she perceived the white furred vixen bursting into flame before her eyes. It was a moment before she realized that it was her imagination and that Amber was fine.
“Kitty, are you okay? You look pale. Are you sure you’re okay enough to be walking around?” asked Sly seeing this.
“Huh? Oh. I’m sorry Master. I’m okay. I was just scared when the crystal burst. I thought the rune on Amber’s collar would kill her if she was outside of Bartholomew’s Castle.” said Maneki truthfully.
“The crystal was a nullifier to the rune; yes. But the rune it blocked is the same type as one on your collar. She can’t be too far from her totem, but her totem is not Bartholomew’s castle.” said Sly.
“Then what is her totem?” asked the calico both relieved and curious.
“I take it it’s this Master?” asked Alice pulling the tiger’s eye amber from her pocket in full view of everyone.
“Exactly Alice. That is why I asked you to stay near the front of the castle. So it would be closer to Amber quicker as she approached the castle.” explained Sly as he held out his palm for the lynx to hand him the stone. Alice smiled knowingly as she did so obediently and stepped back after. Maneki gave a sigh of relief as she heard this. “Looks like my plan went over more or less how I envisioned it would. Amber; I want you to know that I will find a way to remove the rune from your collar. Until then and beyond you are welcome to stay here in my castle.” said Sly seriously to the vixen.
Amber shook her head softly at the notion. “Master Sly you have done more than enough for me. I am content to stay here and serve you. Please don’t concern yourself with the rune any longer.” said Amber with a shy smile before kissing him on the cheek.
Sly smiled at the vixen and nodded to her request. “I am happy to have you. I hope you will be happy living on my land. Alice, will you and Maneki please show Amber to the infirmary? She carries it well, but she’s got a lot of injuries that need healing.” said Sly suddenly.
“Yes Master.” replied both felines together.
“Thank you. Now I’m going to relax myself. I don’t want to be disturbed unless it’s important.” said Sly before turning to walk off himself.
“Understood Master.” called Alice behind him.
*****
The door closed to the guest room behind the cream colored feline as she took a deep breath. She all but collapsed onto her back on the small bed and opened her eyes to face the ceiling. “Everything is different.” she noted aloud to herself as she thought of her life before coming here. “It’s been just me and ‘Neki against the world for so long that I’d forgotten what it’s like to be around so many people for any extended period of time. And to that end things have a different feeling here in the castle this morning too.” she continued as she thought of what she felt as she returned here from the infirmary.
Walking down the halls she noted that none of the guards or maids had given her any sideways glances. Perhaps that was because she was clothed now unlike before. But more than that maybe it was her imagination, but the ominous and threatening feeling she’d gotten from the castle and from Sly himself seems to have disappeared. “And Sly…I’ve never met anyone as much of a mystery as him. He was domineering, arrogant, almost cruel when I first met him. But at the same time he’d placed healing runes on me and ‘Neki to keep us safe during the heist last night. I know it was because he wanted us to succeed and ultimately fulfill his goal, but I can’t help but think that there was more to it than that. I’ve seen a few different sides to him in the short time I’ve known him, but I can’t tell which is the real him. In any case he doesn’t seem to be as bad as I first pegged him to be. Though I don’t know how long that’ll last either. Judging by how he’s regarded us this morning our completed missions have put us on his good side for now. All I know is that I feel like something big is going to happen soon. I just wish I knew what.” she mused as she turned over and closed her eyes to rest. As uncertain as things were in her mind at this moment; she could at least enjoy the rest she’d been granted for now. He was right about one thing. After last night, she’d definitely earned it.
*****
The air swirled in the warm midday sunlight. Purple wings beat with a steady rhythm in the sky above Sly’s land. Blue robes flowed in the air as a figure came to a stop in flight and hovered in place. “There it is. Lord Sly’s Castle.” said a feminine voice as the figure began to descend.
*****
“I can’t believe how many scars she has. She really has been through a lot.” said Alice as she walked with Maneki.
“Yeah. And she was only allowed to use weak healing runes on herself. That Bartholomew really is a cruel bastard. Who knows what she’s endured for years serving him. I’m just glad she’s safe now.” said Maneki truthfully. Alice nodded her agreement before the sound of clanking metal and quick footsteps caught her attention.
Both felines looked forward to see a guard approaching swiftly. Maneki recognized the guard as Virgil from before. “What is it Virgil?”asked Alice as he approached.
“Head maid Alice. A guest has arrived for Lord Sly. Would you happen to know where he is at the moment?” reported the rabbit quickly.
“Master Sly is not to be disturbed unless it’s extremely important. Whoever it is will have to wait in Guestroom 1 until he is ready to see them.” replied Alice before the flutter of purple wings drew everyone’s attention upwards.
“Would the arrival of an official messenger of the king’s castle qualify as extremely important…” asked the female figure as she landed before Alice. Her robes were deep blue, and bore the insignia of the royal family. They covered her body fully except for her wings which were purple dragon’s wings with black tips. “…or should I return with the report that Lord Sly refused to receive me because the message I brought was not important enough?” continued the figure next.
Alice stared dumbfounded for a moment as she beheld the robed figure now. “I-I-No please I apologize for…”
“Turning away a messenger of my status isn’t a good idea. People have lost their heads for being disrespectful to messengers before.” said the figure next. The lynx’s pupils shrank at the implications of her words. This was serious.
“I swear I meant no disrespect. I was just unaware that you were coming.” stammered Alice quickly before a laugh cut her off. The laugh was coming from the cloaked figure before she took off her hood to reveal her face.
She was a Flitten; a half feline and half dragon hybrid. Purple fur covered her feline face. Her hair was long and brown. Glasses adorned her face as well in front of her brown eyes. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t resist. My message is for Lord Sly yes, but it is not a verbal one. If you are his head maid I assume you are directly under him in importance here?” asked the female to Alice.
“Y-Yes I am.” said Alice still a little shaken at the prank.
“Well then I can entrust the letter to you. But know that once I pass it on to you that it’s on your head if he should not receive it.” said the Flitten with a wink as she handed the rolled parchment to the lynx.
“Don’t worry. I will see that he receives it.” said Alice in reply.
“Very well. Now I’ve got a couple other messages to deliver today so I’ll take my leave.” said the messenger with a polite nod. Alice returned it before motioning for Virgil to escort her outside.
Maneki watched the exchange unfold with a sense of awe. She’d never seen a messenger from the King’s castle before. She had to admit the Flitten had an exotic beauty she’d never come across before. Her thoughts were interrupted when she realized that Alice was speaking to her now. “I’m sorry, what did you say Alice?” asked the calico bringing herself back to reality.
“I said that I think you should be the one to take this to Master Sly.” repeated the lynx with a smile.
“Wh-Why me?” asked Maneki quickly.
“Why not you? What’s the harm? It’s just a letter. He may ask you to read it to him, but other than that there’s nothing to be afraid of.” said Alice with a smirk.
“But he said that he didn’t want to be disturbed.” said Maneki next.
“I’m pretty sure a letter from the King’s Castle will qualify. And if it doesn’t you can tell him I told you to interrupt him.” said Alice with a wink.
Maneki sighed to herself softly. She knew she wasn’t going to win this. “Alright alright I’ll take it to him.” she said defeated.
“Thank you. Now if you’ll excuse me I have to give Virgil a little lesson in announcing a guest’s title when introducing them.” said the lynx seriously as she began to stomp off.
“Wait is Master in his chambers then?” asked Maneki.
“What? Oh no he said he was going to relax. There’s only one place he would go. Take the next hall on your left and turn right down the stairs. You’ll know it when you get there.” said Alice with a smile as she rolled her sleeves up menacingly.
“Virgil is going to get it.” thought the calico to herself as she watched Alice walk off. “Well I’d better go. Standing around isn’t going to get it done any faster.” she said as she turned to follow Alice’s directions.
