A very astute point, but as you have said he wasn't really in any educated company. He spent most of his time with a roving band of mercs and muscle who didn't really care to teach a young half-orc writing and arithmetic. However, when they saw that he was larger than the average half-orc they did train him to the point that he essentially became a battering ram with legs. XD
