As an adventurer, Malek travels far and wide all over the world to a variety of locales. He's been to foreign lands, interacted with isolated tribes of strange new people, and delved into ancient caves and ruins. It is common while exploring the remnants of an old civilization to find different kinds of riches; You may find currency used by the old inhabitants, maybe even precious gemstones which could net you a nice amount of gold back home. Rarely though, you may stumble upon a true treasure. An artifact that utilizes a totally different form of magic that can achieve wondrous things? That's a keeper. The "Dragonbone" Inscriber was among one of Malek Lukos' first discoveries of magical items, and possibly among the most powerful he had ever found that would shape his entire future.
Upon discovery, it was unclear at first what this object specifically did. It appeared to be a modestly decorated tooth, claw, or something carved from an old bone. However, it had a peculiar faint glow at its narrowest point that piqued Malek's curiosity. In a somewhat foolish act, he touched the point with his hand while handling the object. Despite no pressure or force being applied, the relic pierced Malek's flesh, drew blood, and seemed to absorb some of it. From that point on, the tip had a more lively glow, it had appeared to have been awakened from dormancy. With further experimentation, using the artifact on various objects, Malek discovered that the tool could magically write upon a surface with mystical lines, despite the thing having no ink of any sort. If Malek had stopped experimenting there, he might have just discarded this relic as a primitive magical blood leeching pen quill, but it was so much more than that. Sealed along with the relic, Malek found ancient parchment and documents that suggested the artifact was used to physically inscribe spells, and not just on inanimate objects... But on people as well. With the assistance of his brother Vakos back home, the brothers were able to more thoroughly translate the documentation, and uncovered a remarkable detail. This inscriber wasn't used only to write common spells or runes, but rather it had the capability of inscribing Words of Power...
Words of Power are an ancient and incredibly powerful form of magic that is largely forgotten. Only a handful of Words have survived the trial of time into this age, and are only known by the most masterful of wizards. To utter a Word of Power is to unleash some of the most potent magic known, and can be fatally dangerous to speak if not probably prepared. Words of Power were also impossible to be written onto any paper or surface. This Inscriber however was able to achieve what was believed to go against the rules of magic, and could safely write *and* erase Words of Power on any surface, including living beings. Which led Malek to the obvious question, "What exactly happens to me if a Word of Power is written on my body?" After much time and research, this eventually had to come to a dangerous test: To write a Word on Malek's body, and thus, the extent of the Inscriber's true power was revealed.
Malek had taken a translated Word of Power he had found initially stored with the relic and inscribed it onto his arm, and the results were astounding. He had immediately undergone a transformation that had changed his body and bestowed him with amazing natural abilities that would be unbelievably useful to have on any given adventure. With the mystery solved, he used the Inscriber to erase the Word on his arm and he reverted back to his normal being. With the test being a remarkable success, and with full possession of a potent magical artifact, Malek had taken a new special interest in Runes and Words of Power. He set out on a new grand quest to discover forgotten Words, and dubbed his new trinket the "Dragonbone Inscriber." In truth, this is only a nickname provided by Malek. It is unknown if the material is actually carved from the bone of a historical dragon, if it is even made of bone at all. It's origins and creation still remain a mystery, but it has proven to possess great potential and utility to Malek, and would guide him on a path to discovering many new forms, and the rediscovery of the lost art of Shapeshifting.
A concept I am working on. I am possibly thinking of making this a permanent part of my main character, Malek Lukos' design, by turning this into an accessory necklace. I may move this to scraps later. I'd appreciate it if anyone has some feedback on what could make this even cooler. :3

I would make it so that it 'writes' with his own life-force. The more he writes, the weaker he is overall, as it is his life-force that supplements its capability to break the rules of magic and write words of power. His life-force is regained over a period of time as the written words, and thus the effect of the spell, wane, or by erasing the words and returning his life-force to him directly. This effect only occurs when using it to invoke spells that he doesn't use inherently (i.e. a practiced, taught spell). Using a particular spell enough times will increase his fortitude regarding his capability to inscribe it using ambient magic as opposed to his own life-force except in the cases of extremely powerful and taboo spells. Mundane writing that carries no magical significance doesn't fade over time, and costs him nothing more than the effort of writing them. Should he come close to exhausting his life-force, the pen inscriber will instantly erase all life-force draining spells and he will fall unconscious and becomes sickly until his life-force recovers.
The idea being that he can use it to great effect, but that he needs to be aware of his own limitations.
