The functional part of those comes from design, not art.

Code in the art realm often becomes just as useless. Code is a viable media, just as anything else, but once it is used to conceptualise or look for aesthetics, it takes up art's uselessness - you can't open a website with the same app that's drawing circles in realtime at a gallery... It may be code, but drawing circles at a gallery isn't a functional way to use it... Same for paint, you can use paint for painting a fence, or you can make art with it.
